Please could someone explain Royal Mail accounts etc for me?
I'm new to RM, doing part-time collections, and I'm not up to speed on the whyfor of strikes etc. So I thought I'd look at what I could find about RM on the web so I could work out what's going on. I found accounts for 2006-7 which are interesting but only show 'people costs' as totals (but larger than 2005-6 even though there are fewer people) and I was hoping to find out what proportion of these people costs were for 'management' and how much were for 'real workers' but it doesn't say (this was important where I've worked before, a much smaller organisation though so maybe RM is different?). I'd like to work out for myself what RM could afford to pay me but I can't find enough facts to go on. Can anyone help please?

Hello Jemima. Welcome to the most corrupt, manager oriantated business in the country. One of the reasons the people costs are so high is because Royal Mail pay their managers a total of £40M in bonuses for the quality of service you deliver.
I know it's a while to wait, but check the accounts next year as RM will not be hitting QoS targets due to the strike action brilliantly supported. I'm sure they will be £40M lower than this year.

Thanks for the comments!
So if there aren't any details available, I have to do the calculation on my own with not really enough info?
Here's what I get (is only an estimate and is subject to revision if I find out more) based on the Interim report for september 2006 for the number of employees and the audited accounts for 2006-7 for the people costs for RM letters
number of employees
170097
people costs
£4702000000
Some people will be part time and some will only be casual and not be included in the people total, assume that part-time balances casual for now, so that makes an average weekly cost to RM per employee
£531.60
Some employees will be managers, assume they get paid, on average, three times what a postperson gets (so one manager = 3 postpeople) and that there is one manager per 25 postpeople (that would be a sensible number)
So the effective number of employees is 170097+(170097/100*4*3) which is 183705
divide the people costs by the effective number of employees to find out what an ordinary postperson should cost RM
it's about £25,595 per year or £492 per week, assuming an average 40 hour week - RM do give uniform and pension money and workplace insurance, maybe that costs £60 per week per person? Take that off,
So average postperson pay might be £432 per week, but I haven't yet allowed for any overtime payments or early start payments because I'm not sure how that works? So if I take off 10% to allow for that,
average postperson pay could be £389.00 or £9.725 per hour??
that is, they could give a pay rise of at least 10% to postpeople without the people costs increasing, if RM is managed effectively
does that look about right? Have I missed something out here?
Please let me know if I have and I'll try again
