Holidays help please

Ok so in my office the union rep is in charge of allocating holidays. We were all told to hand in our leave forms. Some people didn't hand them in so he has started allocating leave in seniority and those who didn't hand in their leave forms he is chasing .I have young children so really need the school holidays. Should the holidays be in seniority order?

It's the role of the book room opg to sort leave out and it is done on a rota basis depending on how big you office is. The initial allocation would go on seniority but the succeeding years would see the rota changeabout and the most senior would be last and the second group would be 1st, 3 rd year 3rd senior 1st, et seq.

We don't have a rota in our office. It's just being done on seniority so being number 70 I have no chance of ever getting what I'd like. So the same people every year will get their preference

WWWwwwwwwwwaaaaaaa! Not grizzling about seniority again?! We have our OPG do all the leave and it goes on seniority and if you don't hand your form in by the date on the form, it gets allocated for you. If you really are that desperate for time off why not ask someone with the weeks you want to swap or go halves? You're bound to find someone to do a deal

Except with seniority, you will eventually move up the list so it's not "no chance" is it.... you just have to wait your turn like everybody else!

That's exactly how it SHOULD be done! Not on seniority EVERY year, we all would like a couple of weeks off in the summer, my 2 weeks this year are the last week Sept and first week Oct. But I'm not moaning, last year it was July. No prob!

I have been there for years and have hardly moved up the list! Only those that are at the top of the list think the seniority is fair! When it comes to resigns yes I'm for it but not holidays

I have been there for 11 years and have hardly moved up the list! Only those that are at the top of the list think the seniority is fair! When it comes to resigns yes I'm for it but not holidays

I feel for you , it stinks when 30 year posties still book august when they dont even have kids! You will probably be far enough up the list to get august when you have gran kids. Plus the union rep should never be sorting out the hols. I think you should contact your area rep if your not happy

Check the 'Way Forward Agreement' where it talks about annual leave. I don't recall the process having changed since it's introduction, so any local agreements have to fall within the bounds of the WFA and placing seniority first every time in allocating annual leave does not fall within the 'principles'.

Holidays are never allocated on seniority now, it was changed years and years ago and if your office is still doing it then its wrong, also your rep should definately not be allocating holidays no matter what.

I have found the wfa and it does state that holidays should not be allocated by seniority.

My rep does the A/L aswell. It is all done in groups and it rotates so everyone has the chance at getting at least 2 weeks they want.

how would you suggest holidays are booked then? just because someone doesnt have kids doesnt mean they shouldnt be allowed to take school holiday weeks off. seems to me just lately people are using having kids as a reason to get what they want. Oh I cant finish after 2:30 ive got kids so i should be given a certain duty, Oh I have kids I have to have school holidays off.
