Well after a terrible tip tally this Christmas it poses the question, why is it that a lot of people have no problem about tipping restaurant staff, taxi drivers, barbers etc etc (indeed workers in these professions expect tips), yet for posties it is only considered worth doing it once a year at Christmas. I mean if I am delivering a packet to your door, why not give a couple of quid as a thank you for delivering it, like a person might if a taxi driver dropped them off, or a waitress after a meal. I wonder if this is a British mentality thing, I mean I wonder if posties from say America or Germany, only get tips at Christmas or if they get them all year round for the service they provide. I think the hard work posties do gets taken for granted in this country .

I don't expect tips because I'm doing my job but it would be nice to get a little something from people you go out your way to help. Needless to say when I go back to work certain people on my round will now find themselves having to make a few trips to the office each week :-) Will cost them more on petrol than a tip would have and "safe places" suddenly don't seem safe enough to leave things anymore ;-)

totally agree. really went out of my way to help people, going round the back of peoples houses and putting packets through cat flaps, open windows etc...
even in with the guinea pigs!!!

I get paid for my job and if someone feels they want to tip me for doing my job then I will accept with a smile but if they don't want (or are able) to tip then I will also smile and accept that too, our job isin't about getting tips it's about delivering mail.............that said, I had the best year for tips ever

Out of the 5 duties I cover only one of them offered to share their tips with me which is greatly appreciated, I only had 2 tips altogether over the festive period and thats because I regularly speak to them on a weekly basis.

Yes I know its our job, but its the taxi drivers job, and the waiters job also, but they expect to get tips from the people they serve all year round, so why should we not ? Posties bust their balls all year round getting mail to people even beyond the call of duty in a lot of cases, and the majority of the public take this all for granted.

I'm A floater as well,all the tips i get i give to the duty holder.In past years one does give me a percentage of his tips.

my tips this year were down by 90% from last year mostly due to not seeing anyone since we started P/L because we are now getting to everyone a lot later.
Also when you have someone who wants to ask something or wants a chat you cant stop.

A quick search on Google seems to indicate that most Northern European countries, and those settled by people from there, only tips at Christmas. However apparently in Mexico posties do expect a small gratuity when delivering, as I seem to remember they do also in India, Pakistan and that general region.

However, perhaps the answer is actually in your question. The people that customers tend to tip at Christmas are ones that have provided a service on a regular basis. The paper boys and girls, posties, hair dressers, barbers, bin men etc, whilst the ones that are tipped at "point of service" are ones that you see only rarely like your own suggestions. So perhaps there is a certain mentality at work, but also a touch of common sense as well.

Its the older generation that tend to tip. As they leave this celestial planet, the amount of tips I predict will fall. New estates are generally barren places for receiving tips, the younger generation have no time to pass the time of day, let alone consider tipping.

Well i do very well on christmas tips and wouldnt dream of sharing with the floater , he flys round and destroys the duty and all the others that he does

You'd be lucky if they walk past you, some don't appear at all during December
