A campaign worth supporting and publicising

I know that those who work in deliveries are only carrying out Royal Mail's legal obligation to deliver all addressed mail, but even if some of that mail is 'scam mail', we as individuals still have to deliver it. Trouble is, vulnerable people sometimes fall for these scams and once they do, their details get sold on and before long, they get deluged with similar letters. The effects on victims who get taken in by promises of bogus payouts can be devastating. OK, some may think you'd have to be dumb or just plain greedy to get taken in by these conmen, but they target the elderly in particular, who unlike those of us who work inside the mail business, can easily believe they have been the only recipient of such a 'winners' letter, when those kinds of letters could in fact be mass-produced on an industrial scale. They respond to one... and the floodgates open.

Two of the aims of the campaign - via changes to the law - are

· A system to be put in place which enables postal workers to sound the alarm when they become aware that someone is being targeted. (Some victims have had as many as 30 items PER DAY sent to them)

· Mail to that address to be stopped / redirected and screened by a relative, trusted person or trained member of staff at the local sorting office. In many cases the only people who know that a crime is being committed are the scammer and the postal worker, as the victims do not recognise themselves as being a victim of crime.

Should we be able to whistle-blow like this ? I personally think so, after reading some of the horror stories from victims' relatives in 'your stories' section of the site.
