Why are people so lazy?

Doing a collection yesterday - 1.5degrees, hail, sleet, rain - I got to a really awkward/dangerously situated box and emptied it.
Taking my life in my hands to get back to the van and I hear, "Hello!"
The lady wants me to wait, whilst she gets her letter/card etc. ( She lives less that 15mts from the box!)
After not being able to open her van, fumbling with newspapers, cards and other documents, she still hadn't found it after a minute.
I drove off.

No, I'm not a Scrooge and I generally go out of my way to help customers, but SOME people...
