Any hints for a newbie on how to keep mail/everthing! from getting too wet? Was out on my bike round for the first time on my own today the rain and really struggled to keep things dry. Or is the answer its impossible?!

Tie up bundles much smaller than normal, so the last delivery points in the bundle you are delivering from are not exposed to the elements for too long. Use the yellow waterproof liner inside your pouch to help keep everything dry. Use your storm coat and waterproof trousers (or possibly your own if you're brand new and have no uniform) to protect you from the rain, but then swelter in your own heat and sweat.

Its just a thick plastic yellow bag.

You only get them when you get a new plastic bag...............haven't seen these in years (plus all they do is catch the rain and end up swimming in water).

When bundling up, try and make sure there's a plastic covered magazine at the back of the bundle, this helps keep the mail dry if you keep the bundle slightly tilted towards you.

You will always get some damp letters but if your bundles are kept small as stated above....

One day RM will buy in waterproof pouches??!!

Not much you can do really. If you try to hold the mail close to you to shield it from the rain, the water just runs off your coat onto the mail anyway.

The yellow bag liners only come with the brand new bags and they're like hens teeth anyway. Plus, as DGP said, all they do is hold the water in nicely- just like your coat pockets

All you'll find is that the mail will get soaked, you'll get soaked, then you'll struggle to push the mail thru letterboxes because it's so soggy and it'll stick to your fingers, then you'll get people whinging at you because the mail is soaked while you're stood there looking like a drowned rat and they're stood in the dry whinging at you... It's great being a postie. I really miss it...

F*ck the mail, worry about keeping yourself dry. Anything else is somebody else's problem.

I find that if you forget about the yellow bag, your mail has far more chance of keeping dry. Dont pack the bundles flat, pack them on end. This way you will probably find that the edges of large flats will still get wet, but the smaller mail stays dry, that is unless it absolutely sheets down all day.The yellow bags only hold the water as previously stated. The red bag is porous and the water will drain out.
