Membership Subscription rates from 1st January 2012

Following discussion at the NEC and given the financial situation of the union, it has been decided, in line with Rule 11.5.1 to raise the subscriptions of all members. With inflation currently running at over 5% the NEC determined that we should keep our core rates to a below inflation 4% increase to recognise the financial pressures members are under.

In addition, the political levy paid by those members who are “opted in” has not risen since the inception of the CWU. The levy will therefore rise to 20p per week, (87p per month).

At the time of introducing banded rates, all existing part time members were moved onto the nearest equivalent rate to their previous subscription. This was a temporary measure, and work is ongoing to migrate all members to the correct rate for their company and the hours they work.

From 1st January 2012, CWU subscriptions will therefore be as below.

In order that members are charged the correct subscription It is important that all new
members record their weekly working hours in the space provided on the Application Form as well as their employer

Lets hope they invest a bit into communication to find reasons why people are leaving so rapidly these days. Over the last 12/18 months never known so many to leave in such a short space of time.

So are we all getting a 5% wage increase in April 2012?
Pro-rata Xmas and post revision bonuses (in theory) for PTers, but no pro-rata for PTers subscriptions?

Has anyone ever put a motion forward at conference that the subs should only go up by the same as the pay rise that the CWU agreed that year, and that it should only be increased at the same time as the pay rise. Also if they included that there would be no clawback of subs for retrospective awards.

Possible result - more interest in getting the pay awards sorted quicker.
Also it would mean that the Union as a whole would have to budget under the same constraints as its members.

Members on 30hrs have seen their subscriptions rise from £1.90 to £3.33 in the space of 18 months.
That is over 40% and completely unacceptable.
Tony Kearns was challenged at conference over it and claimed that this was due to the way Royal Mail now calculated direct deductions, which did not take account of all relevant factors in determining the correct deduction.
He said he would approach Royal Mail to address the issue.

But before that happens.............I can't see why they are increasing the subs be more that any wage increase, I suppose if they manage to get us a 5% increase then it will be ok but other than that it seems that they are just feathering their own nest.

I'll try to put my balanced hat on for a minute....
Costs are rising for the union just like us at RPI(over 5%) per year.
If membership sub increases are kept significantly below that obviously something will have to give.
Switching hats again i would say that the projected savings we were supposed to see going forward should have mitigated at least some of that increase....they don't seem to have.
They seem to have taken the easy option again and just hiked the subs.

Have real sustainable savings been made at HQ?
We'll need to wait for the accounts to come out to really see that.

Full time- Grade 1 = £2.65 per week (£11.49 per month)
Part time - Grade 2 = £1.50 per week (£6.50 per month) GMB members working part-time for 20 hours or less and GMB members under 18 years. School support staff working 28 hours or less on term-time only contracts pay Grade 2 - £1.50 per week (£6.50 per month)
Sick and unemployed members = 5p per week.
Retired life members £25 one off payment.

Nearly half my tips last Christmas went on my CWU subscriptions this year, and it's looking no better for next year .

£3.95 for full-time.
£1.65 for part-time.

..but you do get Bob Crow for that...not to keep mind.

Its getting to the point where people have to think twice whether they can afford to pay this much in the current climate.

Its not like we're going forward any more, more like helping RM to manage decline.
