the facility time agreement is one of the reasons i have put the revison in my office into disagreement

royal mail want to give union release time on an add-hoc basis and the only timed release time will be for the weekly resource meeting

i am talking off say 30 minute a day minimum for example in the mornings

comments please people

I'm not a big fan of built in release for reps or having a rep's walk.
I think it sends out the wrong message to the members and can distance you from the real workload your members are experiencing.
Who says you will need 30mins or more every day?...perhaps understandable if you are in the middle of a revision otherwise i'm not convinced.
I've said it before but if a rep can't argue for adequate ad-hoc release for themselves...then he/she is not really much use to the membership.
Being a rep should never be about making life comfortable for yourself...not a personal dig keith...just a generalisation.

i can see where you are comming from but put it into this context

it is not about making it comfortable for yourself

i need this extra time to study agreements, whats best for the members etc

we have an active branch and send a contingent to all the demos, rallys etc when asked by other unions like unison and unite for which i am one of the contingent

hoiw many reps on this forum can say they give up part of there weekends for this extra union activities, not to mention sorting out reps problems when at home

being a rep is not a 9 TO 5 VOCATION

you are dealing with peoples lives and any rep who cannot give that little bit extra needs to take a step back and think is this responsability best suited to themself

Tenuous keith...
If an issue arises which requires detailed study and research, that's what you do.
If you don't want to do it in your own time which is up to you then you put forward a case for release...if it has merit and you're a decent rep it shouldn't be a problem.
To build in a certain amount of time in your duty every day to read the MTSF agreement is in my personal opinion taking the piss a little.
we have an active branch and send a contingent to all the demos, rallys etc when asked by other unions like unison and unite for which i am one of the contingent
That's very noble and i fully support you but you can't expect Royal Mail to pay for it.

You're not talking about giving a little though...this thread is about facility time.
You're talking about taking a little. :cuppa

Fishtank are you a rep? just wondering because I would rather a rep who has forced RM to give proper release time (built in to duty) so they can properly prep for APs / CCs and resource meetings. Most reps already give their own time its not just 9-5 but 24/7. I think you need to be a bit less patronising and take up the challenge and see for yourself. If you were a rep then why have you given up, if you are still are rep I would be a bit worried that you would be taking the piss by not having prepared well for any AP/CC. Its hard enough trying to keep managers to national agreements as well as members questioning the role of the rep when there are elections every year!

pcb...
Yes i am a rep.
If i need release to prepare for an attendance procedure or conduct case i request release.
I have never been refused.
No one has ever accused me of taking the piss or not being prepared...if you knew me you would find that statement laughable.
The members appreciate the fact that i do the same job as them 99% of the time.

Back to built in release...
How many AP or CC cases would your average rep in an average office deal with in a month?
I am very average and so is my office(150-ish staff) and i would say...1 maybe 2.
Given that keith wants 30mins per day minimum that's a lot of preparation time even with the weekly resource meeting thrown in.
As i said earlier if you're in the middle of major change i can see the point but otherwise what you are doing is feeding the "my rep's a lazy tosser" monster and distancing yourself from the actual workload the member are dealing with..
How much release do you have built in pcb?

At no point was i being patronising.
Keith asked for opinions...i gave him mine...he's free to ignore it.

All I can say is that I wish FT was the rep for our office.

His knowledge is second to none and the fact that he's achieved that on his own time is even more admirable.

I have 16 hours release as an area rep from an agreement made back in 1995. before I joined. Full time release is given when needed to account for revisions. I think its very commendable that you don't take what is due to you as a union rep and it appears from other postings that you do a good job. Your post implies that if you take facility time you are separating yourself from the workforce, this is a bit washy. I gather you work in a Delivery office so theoretically you and your managers see the members say 2 to 3 hours then their off doing their walks? Now the amount of problems you encounter should stem from the interface of the said 2 to 3 hours yes? Its a bit different in MCs. Now when it comes to Area delivery reps they need all the time plus more from what I gather is a very thankless task! I am not calling into question your integrity I just saying that other reps who have stepped froward need all the help the union nationally can given them, I certainly am available to my members anytime of the week, night and day, that's the way I deem I need to do the job. I agree that there are a very few who use it for their own gains but we must ensure that reps have the tools to help the members. Merry Christmas comrade.

My Rep gets an hour a day. When he's on A/L I cover him and management were taking the piss saying I could'nt have any but that has now been sorted and I get the full release time when he's away.
