promised a full time contract, but then lied too???

hi,

i'm a saturday a/g for the past 4 years. recently applied for a 40hr contract to work downstairs on the machines they introduced. so here goes. the job was advertised for 20 people internally. saying anyone could apply. i went to the interview, passed, my name was on the list to await training. then on the last day they said to me they can't give me the job because i'm just a saturday a/g and dont want too change my 5hr contract to 40hr. thats fine, but why advertise the job in the first place to anyone??? at the time they said i can apply and will get the job then suddenly last minute they changed their minds? unfair... spoke to the union at my office, they said i should have the job. manager said to me what he can do is give me the reserve spot so i can work down there but i will still be on my a/g contract (5hrs).

A month from now still awaiting the training...can anyone give me some advice please??

i may be wrong but i think you should be able to get the job. if the union say it should be yours take it further. even if you have to grievance it as you can put the reason for grievance further career prospects/promotions ops as a reason i think when it gets to stage two. basically we have just had a new temporary 3 month staff member get given a place on the managers course, so if he can why cant you get the job you applied for.

This seems to a financial matter, what they will do is offer you overtime on the machines.

Yea they were all senior to me. 20 in all. I was 21 on the list waiting to get in. Then 1 person dropped out. So I was definitely in. Then was told the great news! I was not accepted. The union did try for some time, but it all came down to the manager. Offering me just the overtime on the job in my same contract. Is there anyone else I can contact outside royal mail to further investigate? Also promised an email of the explanation of why I couldn't get the job. I still await

Part timers have the right to go for a full time job if it is advertised.
Can someone point out what the difference is between an AG and a part timer.I genuinely don't know.

You say the union got involved,what did they actually say,you may have to go higher,sounds like you're being stitched up.
5hrs sick pay,holiday pay ect.

What they want to do is stick a full-timer on the machines so they can replace them with a 20hr part-time ftc and as if by magic...20 hours saved...aren't i a good little Dom.
If you go on the machines on paper it'll cost 35 contracted hours to pay for you plus whoever replaces you on the front line.
It's sneaky,underhand and nasty....about par for the course nowadays.

Fairspark I am sorry to hear of your complaint. The terms of reference for the filling of the CSS Machines operators is first those on substantive full time jobs within the MPU unit , then if that still does not fill the positions then it should be advertised across the MPU feeder officers based on full time substansive people first.

If this then does not fill the jobs than there is the opportunity for permanent part time employees to fill the postions and getting a full time contract but the way forward does dictate that priority should be given to those who are the closest match to the hours which is being advertised so if someone was on 30 hours and the job being sought was for 40 hours and your were a saturday only ag on say 8 hours they would get offered first.

I would suggust you contact your rep and if necessary take out a greivence.

The criteria for filling of CSS roles is most senior applicant. Doesnt matter whether they are FT or PT. It is a NEW job with new hours
