I'd like to be the Unit Rep - What do I do?
As per the title really, I feel our Rep isn't working hard enough for the members so I'd like to do it, what do I do?

Reps are elected for 1 year only so you simply get yourself nominated and seconded for the job and hopefully get elected. Nomination forms are available from your branch office who can also tell you when elections are due. Good luck.

I think the Reps job is for 2 years now before elections.

Requirements :-
Knowledgeable in all aspects of work at your office/operation.
Compassionate/sympathetic.
prepared to be in a room full of management and fight your corner over disagreements/problems.
Shrewd in pre-judging what management's next move could be.
Be able to fight someone's corner at conduct interviews with confidence with knowledge of the code of conduct which for some you could be trying to save their job.
Accept stress as an ongoing impediment.
Be able to talk to managers and use protocol properly in a calm manner even though you really dislike some of the things they get up to.
Be prepared for members to try and give real verbal abuse at you when a revision or such like dosen't go well and the rep is the first to blame because it is the easier option.
Get no pay/allowances for being a rep and use your own phone/stationary/time!!
Member confidentiality.
Prepared to deal with frustration on a weekly level.
Get some 'Just for men', because it has prematurely turned me grey!!
Apart from that it is a wonderful vocation. Sorry hope I haven't put you off.

Try and get some money back for your workmates.
Study some agreements like MTSF and policies like substitution. Look for things happening in your unit that don't feel right and investigate. You can get most agreements on this site.
Develop your writing skills and use the grievance procedure, if necessary, to right some wrongs.
