I am just wondering what the roughest round you have been on is. I was on one last week and it was pretty run down, windows boarded up all over the place etc etc ! Also is it possible for RM to stop delivering to a street or estate because it is just too rough, and not safe for their posties to go on ?

I deliver to one pretty rough street, it's not even tarmac'd!
I'm more at risk from falling down pot holes than abuse from the residents as they dong get up before 1pm and I've left that area by 12.30

I deliver to a scummy estate, but I don't see many of the residents as they rarely set foot outside their front doors before lunchtime, and those that do are usually still in their nightclothes. I see plenty of police though, they are always patrolling that estate

I usually find that the 'rougher' estates tend to have nicer people than the 'nice' areas, never been afraid to go into those areas (even when they where shooting each other ).

No - one postie at our DO does an estate where, in the last 3 years 1 postie had bricks thrown at them, 2 verbally assaulted by kids (in your face type not school kids singing postman pat), and 1 pushed through a hedge, still delivesr on it though.

same here and always in pairs

TBH I like the "scummy" estates once they have accepted you they are very friendly and in the verbal assault case, apparently some Mums and Dads came out and gave the kids some grief in return.

Not as bad as it used to be , was always fun when the giros never turned up. Saw the early risers in their scrap waggons off to sign on lol. Saturday mornings were always quiet.

I had to do the worst round in our office for a few days, I was excreating bricks just at the thought of it.


But i tell you what, once you fight through the dog s##t, washing lines and cars on bricks and broken gates/fences/windows, you are left with on the whole a very friendly community orientated lot.
They leave stuff out in the front garden like kids toys and bikes and they are never touched or stolen, possibly because the thieves are from this estate and have travelled further afield to do the robbing.
And all the doors had numbers on!!!!! Perhaps they don't want to risk missing their giros etc.

A few years back it was the norm on some estates in South London for the posties to double up and carry walkie talkies as muggings/robberys were very common

Don't get me wrong, I know for a fact that the majority of people on these estates are nice, decent hard working people. The good thing about estates like this is that the mail is usually low, and the packets is virtually non existant , so I actually love doing them, very easy day, much better than walking up long drive ways of these posh estates with a ton load of magazines and packets !!!

True It is usually the poor that are the most generous for charities and tips, in my experience.

There's a few less than salubrious estates in the town. The one where the kid was shot dead a few years back, i tend to get the part of the walk where he died over with 1st whilst most of the residents are still abed. I did bump into one early on a saturday morning back when we used to get out of the office at a decent time. He had been asleep in the garden all night apparently and i woke him up when i fell over the gate that was wired shut for want of hinges. Towards Xmas one year, same estate, i walked into the middle of a drunken street brawl, more than a dozen assorted ne'er do wells, clutching cans in one hand , swinging punches with the other, some wearing festive santa hats and tinsel.

Its all part of life's rich tapestry, you know, the ragged bit at the end where the inscription becomes ripe with choice Anglo-Saxon and sodden with vomit and lager and peppered with hot-rock burns.

I.m from a scummy estate anyway i just be myself with them and never look down your nose at them and you should be okay.In fact i had more problems from the toffs schemes,with there [i'm better than you attitude]
