The jet stream is going to be meandering north and south through the country during the week. As it moves north and south temperatures will variously rise and fall. Generally the set stream will be over more southern parts of the country and so temperatures are likely to be feeling cool. There is the threat of some sleet and snow over high ground at times.


Friday 2/12/11
A ridge of high pressure is going to build through the country on Friday. It is likely to be a cold morning with sunny spells and an odd wintry shower in the east at first. Cloud is likely to increase through Ireland and western Scotland as a warm front approaches western areas and rain spreads into western Ireland and then into western Scotland by the end of the day. Highs at a cold 4 to 8C.

Saturday 3/12/11
Further cold fronts passing east on Saturday with a deep area of low pressure centred to the north of Scotland. The front will be bringing rain, some heavy. Brighter and cooler weather will be following, together with showers, some of them heavy. A windy day with highs of 5 to 12C.

Sunday 4/12/11
Low pressure to the north of Scotland through Sunday with a colder west to northwest flow affecting the country. This brings a mix of sunshine and showers, the showers turning wintry over the hills as far south as Wales, and also at lower levels over the northern and western coasts of Scotland and Northern Ireland. Highs at 3 to 7C.

Monday 5/12/11
There is a chance of some much colder weather affecting the country on Monday. An area of heavy rain and sleet may sweep east, turning to snow over the hills of northern England and Wales, before clearing eastwards. Turning brighter and more showery to the north and west with some wintry showers becoming heavy. It will be windy for all with highs at 2 to 6C.

Tuesday 6/12/11
The jet stream is overhead on Tuesday. This brings another unsettled day with strong winds and periods of rain and showers spreading eastwards. The showers could again be wintry on the hills. Highs at 3 to 9C.

Wednesday 7/12/11
Staying unsettled through Wednesday with strong west winds. There will be rain or showers, some of them heavy in the north and west once again. Highs at 3 to 9C.

"There is the threat of some sleet and snow over high ground at times" which senior Royal Mail management are praying will continue throughout December, and on lower ground too, as an excuse for not all Christmas mail being delivered on time.
