World Class Mail & CWU

Post by poptart »

Just read the insert in this months Courier!

Although there is no agreement about WCM, infact I've read the CWU are opposed to the initiative, World Class Mail is happening up and down the country.

Is the CWU now irrelevant??

Sure looks that way.

This flow process is heavily disguised WCM.
Using painted tramlines and porters, sorters preppers etc.
WCM breeds contemp in the workforce and back biting, with team leaders brought in the back door. Mind you I suppose the only 'good' thing is that
it reduces little power mad jumped up lino's! :Very Happy
But all in all it's an expensive to run waste of time bloody yank idea.

It's not a Yank idea, it's a Japanise idea. But apart from that, you're completely right about WCM. It's a missed opportunity, which could have improved things. Instead, it's just hemmoraging money, and slowing things down, with unneccesary beurocracy.

How would it be a missed opportunity andy? It is yet one more sound bite that makes it appear that RM are looking to improve the efficiency and productivity of its operation. The fact that it is Japanese based tells us that this management is totally devoid of planning a working operation through their own initiative. Mail has been delivered in one form or another for nearly 400 years in the UK, so you'd think that by now someone would have caught on to a winning formula - even by chance.

I mentioned one day to the DIM that it was a japanese idea but he said no it's not japanese it's an American idea
I wondered what he was on about, I thought it was Jap-dose'nt matter whoever invented it need a kick up the arse!
And so do I for trusting the word of a bloody idiot!

It's both American and Japenese.

World Class Mail is based on two philosophies Lean Manufacturing
Lean manufacturing, lean enterprise, or lean production, often simply, "Lean," is a production practice that considers the expenditure of resources for any goal other than the creation of value for the end customer to be wasteful, and thus a target for elimination. Working from the perspective of the customer who consumes a product or service, "value" is defined as any action or process that a customer would be willing to pay for.

..and The Kaizen Philosophy.
The Kaizen philosophy is drawn from the Japanese word kai which means “continuous” and zen meaning “improvement” or “wisdom”. The management philosophy, therefore, is defined as making “continuous improvement”—slow, incremental but constant.

It's all drawn from previous management "fads" like time & motion,Fordism,Efficiency Movement and any other bollocks you can make up and invent a name for.

Thanks FT,
Makes me laugh really, they are only interested in indoor activities where this business idealism works.
Come out with me my Japanese friend and see if you can do a delivery on time!!
Oooh you must clean your van before you go out it has a spek of dirt on it,make sure packets are in perfect alignment for delivery!
Make sure bundles are placed on seat properly!
Pile of crap. :cuppa

Because it's supposed to involve the workers in the decision making process, via the "pillars". Now I know that they've set these little groups up, to do their art work for the boards. But unless it will result in job cuts, or cost savings, they pay no attention. Obviously cost savings are important to RM, and if there are any to be made safely, then fair enough. But what about H&S improvements? :hmmmm
Oh they keep the equipment nice and clean "to improve safety and reliability", and get you to fill in near miss forms. But they only include the ones they "think" (if it can be called thinking!) are near misses, and bin the rest. And people are discouraged from reporting accidents, prefering them to be listed as incidents. That way they can win an award. :arrrghhh :arrrghhh

I could go on, but I'm sure you see what I mean. If it was done properly, we'd stand a chance of having a safe working environment, where quality is more important than speed. Obviously, things need to be done within deadlines, but surely quality is more important than shaving a bit of time off the process, isn't it? :hmmmm

The latest scuttlebut is that there are disciplinary procedures now if you have an accident and you are found to be in some way culpable, for whatever reason. I don't want to go into detail in the open forum but there is a case currently running in my office that stinks worse than a fish wife. When the case is finally put to bed I will publish the details.

Well if they are only going to pay attention to any cost cutting initiatives, only pay lip service to H&S issues and ignore negativity - I don't actually see it as a missed opportunity. In truth? I see it as a measure to incorporate change with some semblance of inclusion regardless of whether it benefits the members - as for pillars, it's almost spelt correctly.

Blameworthy warning letters....first appeared in Cardiff when it was a WCM trial site.
WCM requires that you reduce accidents.
Of course it's easier just to find blame because then it doesn't have to be reported as an accident does it?

Thanks for that ft, that may be very useful - I'll pass it on to the rep, of course it is a bit before the bed hopping so maybe the will isn't still there.

WCM was developed from an American accademic's idea. It has been applied by Toyota since 1949 and is so unsuccesful that they went from nothing to being the biggest and most effective car maker on the planet. Every other car maker now also uses these techniques (as do DHL, TNT and many others). So long as is is implemented properly it will work. The big question is if RM will allow it to be implemented correctly or not?

I'm waiting for the joint statement before I make a decision.
