Health and Safety.
Our Dom and line managers turn a blind eye to basically everything as long as the walks get completed. He also informed us at a work time learning that getting the mail out was his job and it supersedes Health and Safety eg trolleys,Private Cars.I already know the right answer but can people back me and say Health and Safety and good work practice always comes first?

Re: Health and Safety.
simple answer to this is contact the area safety rep
i would go as far as a stage one disagreement, maintain the status quo untill the area rep and dsm have a chat about it

Mr xxxxxxxxx (Delivery Sector Manager)
Mr xxxxxxxxx )Area Delivery Rep)
Ref: lack of Health and Safety provision at xxxx Delivery Office
Local Disagreement
I would like to register a stage one disagreement on the following local issues:
The executive action taken in regards to the failure on the implementation of the business health and safety policy as to the Business Transformation 2010 Agreement
The continuing denial for a review on the health and safety policy at xxxxxxx delivery office
The continuing lack of negotiation and consultation with any proposed change of health and safety at xxxxxx delivery office

Hopefully these disagreements can be resolved locally and without undue delay. If this is not the case then regrettably these issues will be passed up to the Area Manager/ Area Rep for action.

You are working with w*****s. Did the rep have a tear up with management about it?theeggster wrote:Our Dom and line managers turn a blind eye to basically everything as long as the walks get completed. He also informed us at a work time learning that getting the mail out was his job and it supersedes Health and Safety eg trolleys,Private Cars.I already know the right answer but can people back me and say Health and Safety and good work practice always comes first?

It's good to get these types of threads, the ridiculous my manager said bollox, so we can reassure ourselves that while the world is falling apart, Royal Mail managers are still being the low-life C***S they have always been.
My BFF Clash
The daily grind of having to argue your case with an intellectual pigmy of a line manager is physically and emotionally draining.

Re: Health and Safety.
Tell your DOM that these days nothing supersedes H&S, if he ignores it he's breaking the law.
I'm just getting into being a H&S rep and my DOM has so far been great about it, If you get no joy from him go to your area H&S they will jump on him from a great height.
Goodluck

Re: Health and Safety.
The law requires employers and the self-employed to conduct their business in such a way as to ensure, so far as is reasonably practicable, that persons affected are not exposed to risks to their health or safety. This includes providing essential welfare facilities for employees.
If you consider that your employer (or someone else’s) work activity is putting your safety at risk or damaging your health, then you should raise your concerns with that employer or person. If no improvement is made and your safety or health continues to be at risk, then you can report your complaint to the relevant enforcing authority and ask them to look into it.
Firstly, HSE can only take action on a complaint if:
i.It relates to a work activity.
ii.HSE is the right enforcing authority for the work.
iii.The issue complained about is sufficiently specific to enable identification of the issue and the dutyholder and/or location and that either:
iv.The issue complained about has caused or has potential to cause significant harm, or alleges the denial of basic employee welfare facilities,
v.It appears to constitute a significant breach of law for which HSE is the enforcing authority.
Therefore HSE cannot deal with complaints about issues or employers where they have no jurisdiction and where they receive such complaints, they will take no further action. The following section should help you identify whether HSE is the correct enforcing authority and then tell you what to do next.
HSE is responsible for enforcing health and safety at workplaces including:
factories
farms
building sites
nuclear installations
mines
schools and colleges
fairgrounds
gas, electricity and water systems
hospitals and nursing homes
central and local government premises
offshore installations
You should contact your local authority environmental health department if your complaint is about the following type of premises:
offices (except government offices)
shops
hotels
restaurants
leisure premises
nurseries and playgroups
pubs and clubs
museums (privately owned)
places of worship
sheltered accommodation and care homes
If you are an employee and you think the law is being broken, or minimum standards are ignored within your workplace, you can:
speak to your employer and try to resolve the issue; and/or
contact your trade union safety representative who can try to resolve the issue for you.
If the matter is not satisfactorily resolved, you can raise it with the relevant enforcing authority.
If you are a member of the public and you think a person’s health and safety is being put at risk, you can directly contact their employer to raise your concern with them.
Suffice to say if your CWU safety reps, both workplace/unit health and safety rep and Area Health and Safety Rep cannot get the issue or issues resolved, then you always have recourse to the Enforcing Authorities.
