I am currently on a 25 hour contract and doing what they call holiday cover which is basically a 40 hour week. The person who was above me was on a 40 hour contract and doing day off cover. She has recently been laid off due to illness and now I am doing they day off cover. I have been told by my manager that my contract is not getting increased due to the changes and provisions being made in the forthcoming year.
So I am doing a 40 hour job but only on a 25 hour contract. On holiday i only get paid 25 hours, Everything else is pro-rata. I am doing the same job as everyone else on a 40 hour contract but getting less for it. How is that fair or even legal.
I have contacted my union and waiting for them to get back to me. If any has any guidance It would be gratefully received.
Thanks

I'm the same. I am on a 32 hour contract but since P/L they have had me doing 40 hours per week for 6 months coming in 1 1/2 hours early every day.
Guess what!! in December I am going back to 32 hours a week. If they moan I will say make me full time then.

It's their way of saving money. If you refuse to do the OT your contract will not get renewed.. very sad.
The only option is to wait it out until the revision then you will either get laid off or offered a permanent contract.

it works the same way u get paid for d2d even though u and a full-time guy do the same job u will get paid less. he wil get paid 20 quid while u will be getting 12
unless u sign a new contract of 40hrs or ur 25 hr contract is finsihed and renewed one has 40 hrs then only u can get such holidays.
legally on 25 hr contract u have no power to ask for 40 hr holidays.

Re: Unfair contracted hours
However, if they are doing the day off cover as a duty then they may have a case for a grievance. One of our lads is doing exactly that they took a 40 hour duty but were not made up, the grievance is currently ongoing.POSTWOMAN wrote:what u say makes sense but - U have signed a 25 hr contract and whateva else is voluntary overtime. it will be very rare if they give u 40 hr contract like jamiethompson saidit is common in RM - theywill screw u over & over on rolling contract #bigtoddy wrote:I am currently on a 25 hour contract and doing what they call holiday cover which is basically a 40 hour week. Re: Unfair contracted hours
Once a PTer is doing overtime, the "SSPR" section of the wageslip is paid at a higher hourly rate than "first ten hours" (roughly £9.65 versus ££9.45) so that a PTer gets the same pro-rota gross pay for 40 hours as a FTer. This extra is to take account of the "Delivery Supplement" variance between FT and PT, which is not to do with D2D, despite many experienced posties seeing it as a direct replacement for the old D2D pay per delivery point supplement.POSTWOMAN wrote:what u say makes sense but - U have signed a 25 hr contract and whateva else is voluntary overtime. it will be very rare if they give u 40 hr contract like jamiethompson saidit is common in RM - theywill screw u over & over on rolling contract #bigtoddy wrote:I am currently on a 25 hour contract and doing what they call holiday cover which is basically a 40 hour week. As for the hours issue brought up by the OP, the simple choice is anything above contract hours is voluntary, so only do the extra if it suits you to do so. The only way you are likely to get any "deals" is if every single PTer in your office refuses to do anything above contract hours, thereby landing the managers in it to their neck, as they rely on PTers like us to keep things running relatively smoothly.

I really hope RM have shot themselves in the foot over this...the knock on effect is that our FTers are now under additional pressure, with extra work, and their Morale is dropping as they see the PTers picking up their bags and disappearing out on Delivery, and in their eyes having an easy day! (Although they are only getting half the pay).
This really is a crap way to run a Business though isn't it? I've given up believing that the Current Management have any intention of trying to fix the problems of Achievable Workloads and Proper levels of Staff..On Proper FT Contracts if wanted.

As you wrote Plodder, the chances of all PT staff singing from the same hymn sheet is less than winning the national and euro lottery in the same week!
How did the PT staff get their extra curricular jobs agreed to by the DOM? I was under the impression that additional jobs outside RM need "the nod" from the depot manager. Either way, good on them for finding alternative paths to paying the bills!

Re: Unfair contracted hours
Don't think they even bothered asking.....why should they? RM can't expect them to just sit by their phones ..just in case there's some extra work available!
I know that's what RM want but Tough s**t Amigo!
Basically most are on Delivery Only and not expected to Turn up until 0800-0900..so they've got a variety of early jobs like contract cleaning that can be 0500-0900...then they turn up pick up their bag and do 4 hours for RM!
Problems occur when Management "Expect" them to prep those "Delivery Only" duties and bag them up before they can start! You know when people are sick/on leave or Pressure picks up, "Sorry we didn't have time to prep it for you"
After a couple of guys said," That's OK I'll prep it but the clocks running and I'm finishing in 4 hours time". It was amazing how those particular duties were always prepped!
Some have got "Shelf Stacking" in the afternoon/evening at the Superstores...problem for Management there is...they're not willing to pile on the OT at the end of the day on Delivery (which is were they want it)! Bummer eh!
Simple answer is..Treat your employees with some Respect and give them the opportunity to work for a Decent FT wage to support their Families.
