Having a drink whilst on IPS

Our DOM has banned us from getting a drink whilst on IPS to get the sorting done quicker. While I know there are a few lazy so and so's on the sorting I don't believe it's fair to stop us all having a tea or coffee when most of us only have 2 in the whole working day, especially when you see workers who don't sort strolling around with drinks and smokers walking out for a fag whilst we're still on the sorting. Has our DOM got the right to stop us getting a drink whilst we're sorting? Are there any links which explain what our rights are regarding this subject? Cheers in advance.

dunno about that but if you work at a computer screen your entitled to a 5 minute break every hour.
now having done that i can assure you you need the same whilst on the ips.

to kee the concentration levels up its beneficial.

Grace Breaks

When work permits a grace break of 10 minutes, over and above the standard entitlements, should be allowed on all indoor and outdoor jobs. In no circumstances should this be scheduled. Where it is not possible to provide a grace break before going out on first delivery the employee should be given the chance to have cup of tea before leaving the office.

Or they can let you have a drink at the frame.

Also,what is the difference between a cuppa and a cup of water...

available for all persons at work in the workplace.

The turd at our DO has also banned us from having a tea/coffee whilst on the IPS. I now take the best part of 10mins going to the toilet, whether I need to, or not.
Two can play silly buggers, just as well as one.

They tried this on in our office last year,so we all got one of those cheap silver flasks from the supermarket;made a coffee at home and drank straight from the flask as then we were not taking time off sorting to make coffee.Now we are allowed to make a drink before we go on IPS and drink it while sorting but not to make another.

This is what happens when you introduce tools like the IWT.
The IWT says the IPS should take X amount of time with Y amount of bodies....but it doesn't because we're not feckin machines.
Management look at the situation,scratch there heads a bit and decide it's because we're drinking tea or talking or because the frames have backs on them....or the flow needs improved.
What they really should be doing is scrapping the Indoor Work Tool because quite frankly...it's s**t.

i know mate, but when they stopped us from taking tea or coffee onto the primary, we obviously objected,,,,then they said it was a health and safety issue. i.e. hot tea or coffee could scald someone if it was spilt. i was,nt being arsey about it, sorry if i gave that impression.

Tried that silly nonsence at our office, soon backed down when we all cut off & and gave notice to cancel our S/A and started coming back off delivery for our Meal break ( After all there is no welfare facillities away from the office ) at 9.30 as per our 318's.

Hot tea or coffee anywhere in a work environment could scald someone.
Has the managers office been risk assessed?

We had this years back so the next day when we were called to the ips everyone decided they needed a pee. The queue was out the door and half way along the office Needless to say we were late off the ips and all booked. Next day we got our tea on the ips back.

Mind you that was a while ago i think some people would now poo themselves and try to sort faster for the good olde guv

probably not, they just make the shyte up as they go along, it,s to get people to sort that extra few letters by not allowing it. they even complain or shift you if we are talking on the ips. its a concentration camp these days!!

Used to have this problem in a previous life...we were Wood Machinists and the Little Hitler in charge tried it on, although he never minded bottles/cans of pop sold from their machine in the canteen. So we all started making up Tea/Coffee in Coke bottles.. and said "What's the Difference"? (Scalding Accepted).

It got worse he started to Hassle people about how many times they were going to the loo! So a few Ex Army lads stared to use piss bottles next to the machine, and said if you're still not happy we can always crap in a bucket! (it never got that far)

Needless to say this sort of thing happens in a non-union environment, Royal Mail doesn't have the Monopoly on Power Crazy Management Arseholes , but it's not good enough that it happens nowadays with H & S etc.
