packet delivering at christmas

our dom, who is hopeless has said that we are getting 2 spare vans and 2 people are going to
be delivering parkets at christmas he said royal mail want to have a noon to 8pm packet delivery. can he take anyone off their delivery and make them change their hours. also I don't mind working until 6pm, but doing packets in the dark and traffic is a lot slower. i think he might be getting muddled up with redelivering of packets just before christmas, which we have done the last few years.

And Christmas arrangements are by agreement...so if you don't fancy it just say no ta.

I was wondering this as well. Got a few at our place already saying they wont be working over there time on deliveries, so could the dom say thats fine but your hours will be changing so you can do packets? Dont think they can change your hours to suit themselves or can they?

our dom has asked anybody want to do a packet run 12-6pm,4 staff asked at the moment all said no,aint bothered asking me coz will prob know my responce,last 3 xmas worked in the dark,this year will be 3pm cut off latest,as the children want picking up from school

It is a directive. However your hours cannot be changed,(voluntarily only),so it will have to be overtime. Risk assessments? You are delivering possibly in high risk areas and in low light. Think about it!

I can sort of understand why they want staff doing these "after dark" packet duties at xmas time.....

BUT
I had to do it myself when i was with RM, you will find that a lot of folks dont like answering the door after dark ( especially the elderly ) plus the houses that have dogs... you are loitering around their property in the dark, if their pooch takes a lump out your arriss, they aint gonna be entirely sympathetic....

Can be hard finding house numbers/names as well, nightmare if its an unfamiliar route to you.

I had a nasty fall down some steps when i did it but at least my accident report got picked up by the union and i eventually got a couple of bags compo out of them.

im losing my park and loop buddy to packet deliveries for the whole of december, dont know how many are doing it ,still gotta do packets for duty havent been told what the criteria is for throwing out packets yet ,confused and worried

our office offered anyone a week off in the summer (when it was quiet)....

and to pay it back 2hrs a day starting 1st nov delivering packets.

i think 3 went for it.

drb you have a 318 and that stands, any work your dom wants done is after that has been completed so any changes to what you do in a day has to be agreed with the cwu rep

Your right Spillie. However some delivery's do not have 318's. Also the bastard Way Forward is quoted as "business needs". Even collections,(even though they have 318's),have been known to cancel their 15:00 collections to pick up "cut off's".

The CWU rep's resource meeting should be used to give at least 2 weeks notice on such duty change. My understanding on these late packet delivery's are that they are strictly overtime only.

at our office all the packet drivers (area not gone p/l yet) are delivering mail left from p/l cut offs

That's what happens at our office from December onwards

In my office the larger packets are put aside and delivered by the callers office staff.. there's two of them in the morning and one does a Hybrid Duty of Firms and Packets... or by the afternoon staff , who come in early (overlapping the morning staff) and do some packets before taking over in the callers office.... Or they'll take some out when the office is closed for a few hours in the afternoon.

If it's really busy they'll offer Overtime to Posties coming back in from Delivery, if they want to do it..it's easy OT after a day in the rain! That's if the DIMs not watching his budget! If they're clamping down on OT then the packets are just left there for a few days! Wonderful Service eh?

To answer your question they wouldn't be able to justify having a couple of guys doing dedicated packets every day, as obviously sometimes it's quiet. At Christmas we usually get a least one person starting as usual and just delivering packets...strange it always seems to be the same lazy fat cow that gets the job every year!

Nevermind the packets,what about the bastard tracked.I am one of only two drivers in our office and we are expected to take all the tracked between us.Last christmas(I gave you my heart)*JOKE*.I left the tracked all week and did them on docket on the saturday(4 hours).I'm buggered if i'm doing the same again this year.When I asked our Manager about a solution,he just said we will see what happens,GREAT!!!!!!!.
