SEVENTY of the biggest Post Offices to close/is yours there?
Daily Mirror
SEVENTY of the biggest Post Offices in the country are to close, it was revealed last night.
Around 2,500 staff are thought to be affected by the controversial decision due to be announced today.
The Mirror has learned that Royal Mail has struck a deal with struggling stores group WH Smith.
Work from offices earmarked for closure will transfer to local branches of the newsagent later this year.
The decision is part of efforts to reverse the fortunes of the Post Office which is losing £70 million a year.
But unions reacted with anger.
Andy Fury of the Communication Workers Union said it was a "kick in the teeth" for staff.
He went on: "These offices employ some of the most long-serving, experienced staff. This back-door privatisation is a betrayal of their loyalty."
Mr Fury warned services would suffer, claiming WH Smith would run the business "on the cheap." Royal Mail will argue it is a way of cutting costs without customers losing services.
Staff will be offered the chance to transfer to WH Smith, apply for other jobs within Royal Mail or take voluntary redundancy.
The deal will slash the Post Office wage bill. It will also mean its has less rent to pay and could free some prime town centre sites to be sold.
There are 450 Crown offices, mainly in towns and cities, owned and managed by the Post Office.
They tested the water with WH Smith last year, handing over the work from six offices in Slough, Swansea, Shrewsbury, Hammersmith, Ashton-under-Lyne and Llanelli.
Nobody from the Post Office or WH Smith could be contacted for comment last night.

However, Royal Mail did acknowledge that wages and conditions were likely to be inferior for employees who transferred to the high street retailer.

It's good to get these types of threads, the ridiculous my manager said bollox, so we can reassure ourselves that while the world is falling apart, Royal Mail managers are still being the low-life C***S they have always been.

The daily grind of having to argue your case with an intellectual pigmy of a line manager is physically and emotionally draining.

re: an unfortunate mess
Hi,
It is a sad state of affairs, but with the government removing many of it's services, and people not needing to use the post office much anymore, this situation seemed inevitable.
I did a bit of work with the PO Customer Insight & Intelligence unit based on Old St. It was run by a top manager with experience working for companies such as Dixons amongst others. They did some great work looking at potential new revenue streams etc.... (He now heads up the unit for both RM and PO Ltd, which researches customers attitudes, potential new products etc....) his name is Crispin Beale.
Post Office's in some other European countries seem to do better and look more like (If Carslberg did PO's they would....)
What do people think is a possible way forward for them. Tony Blair said yesterday at PM Q's that they have subsidised £2bn and can't allocate anymore. It seems any rescue will have to come from private initiatives such as insurance, home phone etc.... Any other suggestions?

Perhaps if the Goverment hadnt allowed the market to be opened up for competition to cherry pick the best bits from RM then the 90% of the profit that the Goverment had used to take could have been used as an extra subsident towards the POs instead of being used by Leighton and Crozier, after all we are supposed to be a public service which is for the benefit of the people of the UK, not a money making industry for companys who want to make a quick buck and coulnt give a s**t about the general public.

There's a post in here bout the Italian Post Office they got it right!!!
Taking away too much and not offering enough new products killed them.
If others can do stuff why can't we!!
It's just a f***ing ploy to grind them down no other reason.
While i understand that some of the little ones do either make a loss or not much profit i think they've gone over board.
How hard was that, there must of been at one time 200,000 employess that could of took advantage of stuff like that.
Plus the general public with benefits and other stuff.
And as for your mate quentin crisp or ian beale or whatever his name is,at the top researching this and researching that, has he been on his hols the last few years??
DON'T LET THE FACT THAT IT'S ALL A PLOY UPSET THE STAFF!!!
Ps Why doesn't Alister Darling pluck his eyebrows

Poste Italiane is now the biggest retail bank in the country, and the second-largest insurer

re: Just providing names to contact regarding ideas & is
I'm just trying to provide insight and possibly helpful information to the facelss name called management. The days of providing a public service are behind us. Postal wise virtually no-one sends social mail, it's almost all B2C direct mail. As for PO's there are increasingly few services that people can't get in alternative ways. I accept that there are people on the margins missing out and I think that is where a public service should be provided at cost or a loss. This is where we have gone wrong in this country in more recent times. We are not all able bodied internet savvy etc..... however we don't seem to want to give, maybe because we have given plenty and we don't always see the results we expected. In my opinion I don't understand how when paying so much more in various forms of taxation people are still making cuts to various 'public' services. How much more tax do we need to pay to be able to provide a PO public service, amongst others?
This may be a political rant, but as with most people I don't care what the colour is of the party leading this country they seem to be on the market liberlaisation / targets society.
I also personally think now is a good time to strike as TNT have not rolled out a alternative delivery network which means everyone still relies on RM to provide that part of the service. Once they have an alternative if you go on strike you will lose loads of mail. Also please have some sympathy with your 'screws' as in some cases they may not be overly happy about the changes, though you may argue that they could go on strike, or leave as Ian Griffiths did!
