The CWU over the past couple of years has just rolled over and let Royal Mail do whatever it likes as long as no-one gets made redundant. It's too high a price to pay. I've had loads more delivery points put on my already too large round; I rarely if ever get a break; I've got unlimited D2D's to deliver; and despite what RM claims my mail is increasing monty by month. All this is with the CWU's agreement. Last straw today was our DOM announcing that he was suspending scheduled days off between now and Christmas for "operational reasons". The real reason was that he'd cocked up the rotas and despite months of warnings, hadn't trained or got any temps in to cover for 3 long term absentees. The union response? It's in the agreement! So it's in the agreement that no-one who works for RM should be able to have any commitments in their home lives, or make any family, medical, or personal arrangements based around scheduled days off? RM can just dictate when you have your day off at short notice!? I've been paying £150.00+ per year to the CWU. Not any more.

It's not in any agreement i've seen or heard of.
If this is your rep's response ask to see what agreement he's talking about.
..and then ask him why he's feeding you bullshit.
Maybe want to talk to your branch as well.

Can I be first to point out, there's no reason for you not to take your brake.And if you haven't got enough time to do your walk, you cut off.You should try my office.Where last xmas, management were trying to convince us, that working your days off was agreed by the union (helped them out anyway )Worked three 6 day weeks,and by the end of it I was like a zombie.I won't be helping them this year Working 40 hours over 6 days + 2 hours OT a day to complete my duty ain't worth ruining my health.Union rep was trying to persuade us to work our day's off(you know the type that says, he's fighting for you,but is really just doing deals behind your back).Think he was scared that he might be put on a duty

I'm still in the union because I'm working for £8.60 odds an hour.Done ten years off "minimum wage" in my past jobs, without being in a union.

No matter how bad you feel about them, you've got to have that extra cover. Do as these guys say, get back in, take it as high as you can. If I wasn't in the union, the fear of strikes, at the very least, would drive me mad. Stick at it, keep highlighting the problems, stick to your guns, and hopefully you'll sort it; or better still, more will follow suit.

Yes it's fair to say CWU could do more but they are all we have and can only be as strong as it's members ! YOU are the only person to blame for not having a break or working your day off and nobody can help you if you don't stand your ground - I have always had breaks and start at right time and end right time etc etc the union is the only defense we have and so long as you do the job correctly and follow the rules there should be no problems that union can't back you with - they are there to help and they are all we have to look after your job as best they can ! I would advise to join back ESP the way things are and are going !

Overtime is voluntary and coming in on your day off is overtime... Surely "end of"?

might that be a resource issue of staff who have a fixed day off each week and asking, not telling if staff can have a thursday off instead of friday for instance

he cant take your rest day off you as it will be unlawful under the working time regulations

flexibility is in the agreement but it takes two to tango, and using operational reasons this early is a bit mushy

I'm assuming by scheduled days off he means annual leave.

I don't actually work for or get paid by Royal Mail on my day off so they would have a hard job suspending it.
As far as the annual leave bit goes...not a chance would i be letting that happen either.
Not unless they were prepared to refund the two weeks in Barbados the whole office had booked.

Managers like this are like dangerous dogs...either muzzle them or take them to the vet otherwise they will keep biting you on the arse but at the end of the day it's the way you bring them up and what you let them away with that's the real cause of their anti-social behaviour.
