Sack For Not Doing Overtime?
Hey everyone,
How you're doing? It's time for my RM banter ;)
I've been working as a part-time postman for a few months ago, and those of you who have worked those kind of hours with Royal Mail surely know what it is like...You know, problems with getting paid your overtime, being "used like a dog", if you are reserve like me and many other little things.
So anyway, last week I was put down to do a ridiculously looooonggg walk, so knowing what that walk is like, I informed my mangers before going out in the morning that I won't be able to complete my delivery and won't do any overtime. They gave me the usual sh!t like, "I have to do overtime" and "it shouldn't take you that long", but I just ignored that.
I prepped my delivery, went out, did whatever I could and at 2pm I called my lino saying I'm bringing back the rest. When I came to the office, I was told I'm "suspended from deliveries for delaying mail"? I didn't really give a sh!t knowing that I haven't done anything wrong and went home.
Next morning, they're pretending as if nothing happened, but suddenly the DOM calls me into his office and says that he will sack me, if I cut off again? I didn't say much, because I didn't know whether he could actually do that or not, so I just nodded my head and went out.....
Now the question is whether he can do that or not? I mean, he clearly has NO serious reason, except me refusing to do overtime on THAT day?
If this is bullying/harassment, then I'm filling out the HCD1 form and sticking it in his mouth.
Thanks for your help :)

Your error was taking the all mail out in the first place, and cutting off.You should have just taken out enough to take you to your time.We are told as soon as you walk out the door you are responsible for delivering all of it.You don't cut off,let him make a management decision. He'll tell you you can do it blah blah you inform him it'll take you over your time.Stick to your guns, and tell him it'll take you over.

Re: Sack For Not Doing Overtime?
That wasnt an error, that was how you do it. As long as you inform them before you go out that you are unable to complete delivery, then as long as you phone them up at an appropriate/sensible time telling them what you are leaving then its fine. Get a grievance in asap.cyrus wrote:Your error was taking the all mail out in the first place, and cutting off.You should have just taken out enough to take you to your time.We are told as soon as you walk out the door you are responsible for delivering all of it.You don't cut off,let him make a management decision. He'll tell you you can do it blah blah you inform him it'll take you over your time.Stick to your guns, and tell him it'll take you over.

Even that urban myth of you have to deliver all the mail you take out is wrong.cyrus wrote:Your error was taking the all mail out in the first place, and cutting off.You should have just taken out enough to take you to your time.We are told as soon as you walk out the door you are responsible for delivering all of it.You don't cut off,let him make a management decision. He'll tell you you can do it blah blah you inform him it'll take you over your time.Stick to your guns, and tell him it'll take you over.
There is a set prodcedure for overunning deliveries and its in Downloads http://www.royalmailchat.co.uk/communit ... es#p180740" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; one part of that document deals with what happens if you realise you are going to go over when you are already out delivering.

When you inform your manager that you will not be able to complete your delivery in your contracted hours, make sure you have a witness present.
Then ask him what he wants you to do.
Then ask him what he wants you to do.
The societies of consumption and squandering of material resources are incompatible with the idea of economic growth and a clean planet.

well said - always make management decide what to do. take it out or leave it - their shout. overtime is not compulsory and they get you to take the work out in the hope you will work past your time. then they try to threaten and bully you if you don't.clashcityrocker wrote:When you inform your manager that you will not be able to complete your delivery in your contracted hours, make sure you have a witness present.

Re: Sack For Not Doing Overtime?
DOM's can't sack.
Are you on a rolling contract, that is the only way they can get rid of you,by just not renewing it.
Have you a rep there?

It's good to get these types of threads, the ridiculous my manager said bollox, so we can reassure ourselves that while the world is falling apart, Royal Mail managers are still being the low-life C***S they have always been.
My BFF Clash
The daily grind of having to argue your case with an intellectual pigmy of a line manager is physically and emotionally draining.

Some Doms can sack.
It depends what grade they are.
Mine can and has.
This isn't about sacking despite the title.
This is about somebody waving their d**k about to try to get someone to do as their told.
Yes it is harassment if you threaten to discipline or sack someone when you know it's a non-starter.
Yes you have to be careful because you are on a fixed-term contract.
...but that doesn't mean you have to put up with this s**t.

Re: Sack For Not Doing Overtime?
They can't sack you for working to time and he is just waving his dick in your face in the hope you will do as he wants. That being said, if you are on a temporary/rolling contract all they have to do is refuse to renew it.
It's a shitty situation and a prime example of why RM managers love to have all these temporary contracts. It gives them the leverage to push workers into working overtime, etc. Knowing full well they have your contracts to use against you.
Definitely get your rep involved if you are a union member. Unfortunately I feel you are kinda stuck as to your options, with your type of contract. Unless of course they have made you permanent?
