I have been delivering to a block of flats that have their letterboxes together on the ground floor. Anyway one address is getting old mail from the last tenant, which is not redirected and I am still delivering their mail to this address. However, the person that lives there now, is piling the last tenants mail up on top of the letterboxes, and its getting quite large. I think they want me to take it away and kill it off, but am I allowed to do that ? The current tenant has not said it to me in person that they want it killed off, and I am not sure about touching mail that I have already delivered to the address. If this mail got nicked would I get the blame ? I mean I am not the one who put it on the top of the letterboxes, I delivered it correctly. Its the current tenant that is leaving it out on top.

Probably better to speak to your manager and get him to take responsibility on what to do next, normally we end up with a card in the frame which states deliver mail to only ********, but best not to kill off mail without either the customer or managers say so.

i recently came across this ,didnt get much of a response from line manager ,so i knocked door of householder and said they need to write on letter rts and why explaining i cant take mail back with no direction to kill off as it could still be classed as live mail or if they passed a post box put it back in with not at this address or not known if they just put it back in with nothing they would only get it back again hope this helps ps if you dont see the person to talk with then leave a note advising them of their choices

I had a batch of kill offs brought to my fitting as usual and on one of them, the new tennant had written, please do not deliver any other mail other than addressed to .....(their name).
I asked the lino what to do, he said well done for checking but just kill off all other mail as requested. happy days.

Naughty...............How do you or the lino know that other person isn't still there, or that it may be a shared house and the other person may have decided to not like his/her housemates and play silly buggers? The mail could be the house owners addressed to a rented property etc. etc.

We can't make the decision to take mail away that's simply been put on top of a letterbox with nothing written on it, or to kill it off before it's been delivered to that address, as we can't assume the previous addressee has gone for good.

All mail should be delivered to the address stated and then wait for it to come back with the post box collections with the approprite indication on such as RTS, moved away etc. Then kill it off.

If the mail on the top of the letterboxes hasn't been endorsed or opened, then it is still live mail.
This would leave you still responsible for it I would repost it back into the letterbox, as DGP says they'll soon get fed up with it and start endorsing it. When they start doing it you can then RTS the lot of it
