Forced to deliver mail on way home today

I was forced by my manager to deliver mail on my way home today,only one bundle of mail 1 mile out of my way on my own bike , I dont have a basket on my bike so had to carry mail in hand , also I dont have a cycle helemt as im on a rural driving delivery. I just wondered if safelty issues have been taken seriously here ?

Would you of had enough time to take the van,do it and get back in your duty time?
If the answer is a yes then you've nothing to complain about.
If it was a no then you should of explained it.

I don't understand why you did it, they can make you work to your finish time but you use the regulation equipment, take out a van/RM bike or on foot but make sure you can finish back in the office at your finish time.

The days of going home whilst still being paid should have finished long ago.

Why did you not use the van? They can't force you to cycle there with your own cycle?

I have been a Postman for 16 years and have never been told to deliver mail on the way home before, thanks for your responses.

If you worked your break you were due a break. Was this taken into account for your finishing time. Whether you had time to spare or not I'm amazed you agreed to this. The problem is if the management see you as a pushover they're going to push you over. I bet you could name lots of people in your office who would never even be asked to do this. A word of advice - take your break.
