a bit of advice please?

im starting with royal mail in a few weeks and been reading through most of the threads but just need a bit of help with one particular question please. ive always worked somewhere with provided uniform/footwear so i dont really have anything suitable to wear out walking for x amount of hours as i had to give my uniform back when i left, and ive read its a bit of a lottery as to when you get a uniform. ive been sent a form to use to order but the email says i cant order until i start. i cant really afford to go buying stuff as ive been unemployed after getting made redundant 6 months ago, so would a cheap pair of black walking shoes, trousers and a polo shirt or something do in the meantime? i assume theyll at least give me a jacket to begin with? as i dont have anything waterproof.

Wear whatever you are comfortable with - I wore jeans and t-shirts for my first few weeks. You'll probably get a hi-vis vest straight away, but not much else.

Comfortable footwear is VERY important,especially if you are in delivery.

Make sure you push back hard on the uniform especially the footwear. If you have a fall and your not in "royal mail" issued clothing/footwear any insurance claims you may seek can be deemed invalid. Especially with the winter coming up. Otherwise if you find the footwear inadequate speak to your GP who can issue a letter of consent for your foot wear and then you can submit a claim for a subsidy towards the footwear you purchase.

Thanks for the help. I'm going to chance applying for uniform as soon as I start so I'm hoping it won't take too long. I will be delivering so the footwear is a priority.

Jeans is ok to wear, but not in wet or hot day as it is heavy to wear.

They do seem to have improved on delivery time, and you should get any uniform ordered within 4-5 working days.

I Got all my uniform on the first day, had a load of new stuff mixed up in a room. As for boots took me 3 weeks to get them from ordering day 1, wear trainers in the mean time.

the real reason is that if you have an accident and you are not wearing PPE

royal mail will conduct code you, minimum ssp wage, say bog off to any claim,etc,etc

Didn't get uniform for months. Well, I got a High vis after a week. No shoes though. Managers were fully aware of it as well, I'm sure.. so if its a legal requirement thats interesting...
