Strap on my bag broke today

I was leaving the DO today and after about five minutes my bag strap broke,luckily I was near to the DO and managed to carry the bag back and get a new one, anyway just wondering what to do if this happens in the middle of my walk, when I am quite far from the DO. What are you supposed to do phone the DO and wait for a replacement, walk all the way back to the DO and get a replacement, or just keep going back to the boxes, which would take twice as long to finish the round ?

I always carry a spare in my van...........one breaks then just switch to another but in all my time the strap has never broken.
