Hi,

A fellow worker attempted to deliver a parcel the other day but they were not home so he went round their back garden and placed the item in an 'old style bin' (thoses metal ones we had all those years ago) he then left them a note saying were it was. This is what he's always done for this address and they are pleased that he does.

However the woman of the house spoke with him today and explained that when she returned home from work the parcel was not in the metal bin. she had refrained from phoning up in fear of him getting into trouble.

But obviously she wants some form of action. She's left it to him to speak with management which he's going to do first thing but he's now in fear of what may happen.

What's the worst he can expect?

if its an agreed practice between him and the addressee, and if she,s willing to confirm that it is agreed as a safeplace drop, i can,t see anything they CAN do.

RM can and do sack for this. Tell your mate to go around with some cash, pay for the item and never do it again.

Yeah if she is willing to confirm it as an agreement between the two.
Chances are if she hears there's no compensation if that's the case.
A sudden memory loss and denial of any agreement will probably ensue.

If she gets no compo for saying she was happy to let him leave the parcel there then I can't imagine she'll be best pleased

was it tracked?? there is an instruction on tracked parcels telling you that it can be left it a customers ''safeplace''. if he,s done it for years i cant see it being a problem. having said that,,, they are trying to get rid of people anyway they can these days

Well...
a) Her gripe is with the sender not RM...She wouldn't be due comp from us either way.
b) It doesn't matter what agreement he had with the recipient,the sender paid RM to have it delivered and it's their contract that this genius breached.
c) Yes he could end up sacked.
d) Yes i agree with gb...i would probably try to reach some kind of arrangement with his customer and try to stop this getting into management's line of sight....if i trusted her.

No, the item wasn't tracked.

Just spoke with him and it seems although he's done this for years, it was him himself who initially started to do so off his own back.

It would seem that paying for the parcel is the only answer then

A cheap lesson! Better than losing his job. RM love Posties doorstepping when is saves them time, out on Delivery and in the Callers Office. but when it goes wrong, it's a different story!

No way he should say anything to management. One guy was sacked in a neighbouring office to ours just last week for much the same thing. In the current climate, RM would love to be able to get rid of an employe with several years service without having to pay out redundancy etc. Your colleague is lucky the customer thought enough of him not to report it. Best thing he can do is keep his mouth shut and come to a private arrangement with her over recompense. Everybody should 'work to the book' from now on just to cover their own backs. If sombody is not in, leave a shut notice. I have several customers with whom I have had an informal arrangement regarding leaving packets (shed, coal-bunker, neighbour etc.) but I have told all of them that this won't be happening in future and explained that it's my job on the line. I don't want to sound melodramatic but everybody should realize that (especially if you're full-time with a good few years service) they'll take any chance to get rid of you cheaply. Many things we used to do, and many mistakes that, at one time, would've got a "try to be more careful in future", are now enough to get you your P45.

So thanks to all above as he's since been to see the woman tonight. She was only to happy to accept the money to cover it (she even offered to go halves but he declined her kind offer and paid in full)
