Office Vacancies/Due Consideration

Post by somadril »

Hi,

I was hoping someone could clarify to some extent the situation I found myself in today..

My office is recruiting new staff on 35hr temp (6 month) contracts. I have been working at office for 4 years (30hrs contract), and have given in writing my clear intent to go full-time following a number of staff leaving etc. I spoke to union and was advised to put my request for due consideration in writing (as i did).. but also to apply to any jobs online! in my office..

So I applied about 3 weeks ago and received this reply today:
Thank you for taking the time to successfully complete your on-line information for the above role.

On this occasion due to the high number of applicants you have not been short-listed; however, as you successfully completed your on-line assessment we would like to keep you on our database for a short period.

This is not a guarantee of an interview so please continue to search and apply for other roles on our website. You can sign up for vacancy alerts which will notify you of any other positions for your selected search criteria.

I would like to wish you every success in the future.
It seems crazy to me that any vacancies wouldn't be offered to office staff on fewer hrs first?!

Can anyone clarify my rights, in terms of due consideration to increase my hours when available, whether I'd have to take an hourly drop in pay?!! (as in new contracts)... or am I just better off taking the sudden increase of OT offered to me, and let someone else get a job?

Not enough info, are you due BT 2010 revision, where are you in the whole process.
Was this a local rep that advised you as he should know where abouts you are in the process.
Some office recruit temp contracts knowing there is a revision and job losses around the courner.

It's good to get these types of threads, the ridiculous my manager said bollox, so we can reassure ourselves that while the world is falling apart, Royal Mail managers are still being the low-life C***S they have always been.

The daily grind of having to argue your case with an intellectual pigmy of a line manager is physically and emotionally draining.

Hi, no revisions to rounds as yet, will be next year apparently. Rep was area chairman. Line manager advised not to apply coz could loose my job after six months..!?
I think we're way behind other offices on revision.. Van share has been pushed back till next year.

cheers

Your rep should be in weekly resource meetings with your manager.
Part of the discussion should involve new vacancies and how they are resourced as per the Stoke Agreement.
If a vacancy at increased hours occurs the chance should be given to part-timers in your office to progress.
The only sticking point in this is if the vacancies are temporary prior to a revision however if there are additional hours available your rep should make sure they are used to the benefit of existing part-time members in your unit first before additional staff are recruited..
good times, bad times you know I've had my share

My rep has not mentioned any of the information you just posted, -just that I should apply for the job, but I wouldn't get it! because DOM will choose someone they like..... :Applause
