Why does it come to this when a collegue gives up

Post by music4essex »

In my office on friday a female work collegue told me they were leaving tomorrow, I was really shocked she had 15yrs service

apparently a few weeks previous she ahd gone to see the dom and asked when the winter came snow ETc could she work indoors ( last year in the snow she had her husband come out and help her as the hct was too heavy)

anyway dom said there is no indoor work :whistle I know there is as I see everyday dom/dim(lino) perform this work. we have at least 10 folks come in to do O/T on ips, I am sure they could have found her some work, but she is a quite lady and not in the union, I know I would have fought hard to sort out a inside job( may have too in the future.

in the last year we have had 5 female leave RM all with 15-22yrs service either on EVR Ill health and just walked away
is this common in other offices wether male or female.

I just think RM management are just grinding us all into submission :arrrghhh

Could have took a sickie over the winter period, if they were not able to accommodate her physical abilities, she should have been in the Union.

Royal Mail is not flexible enough for employees. I worked in Supermarket in past and they are flexible. I worked 5 X 4 hours shift a week I asked the manager if I could change it to 4 X 5 hours shift as it would suit me more, no problem at all. If you want something from Royal Mail it is very hard to get what you want.

So she wanted a job indoors because there is the possibility of having to work in the snow during the winter?.Doesn't that sort of come with the job?, having to go out in "bad weather".

All that is needed is to ask for the duty to be risk assessed, if it's not safe to use the HCT in the snow then it's not safe.........end of story. Contact your H&S rep. and get them to sort it out.

Did she really think that her request was reasonable? I mean come on. Who did she expect to do her delivery?

Not wishing to sound discriminatory here but this job is fast becoming a male (must be young and fit) or superwoman job...... Not many females / older posties left in our office now which is so wrong, and those who are, are often put under performance pressure...... We are all just numbers sadly all the past loyalty you give is soon forgoten. But like I found to my peril (tried to be a marter over the last so called deal) if you come out of or are not in the union you are wide open to management bullying. Needless to say I have rejoined.....

Sex should make no difference. Royal mail is one of the few companies I've worked for that is truly "Equal". We all get the same pay rates, not like the Councils were Cleaners and Bin Men used to get different pay scales.

You can't fight for equality and then ask to be treated differently! :hmmmm As for the Union issue, I agree with NW Postie she should have been in the Union for those 15 years. Your Office must have been a nice place to work if a fellow Postie didn't feel the need for any Union Representation for the last 15 years.

Well as much as I hate to agree with RM management decisions I am with them on this one. We are all paid the same and therefore should all be expected to work the same. If they broke the rules for her, whats to stop ALL delivery staff asking to be kept in over xmas? I'm sure even if there was enough indoor work for her there would not be enough for everyone that wanted to do it too! I would love an indoor duty in the bad weather and I am sure that goes for a lot of posties!

Perhaps they could come to a compromise. If the HCT is too heavy maybe they could arrange for bag drops during the bad weather? :hmmmm

Oh and it's not just women that are dropping like flies with ill health, plenty of guys in my office are suffering badly too!
Union what Union? Do we have a union?

Irrespective of sex we should all be the same,we are payed the same we do the same job(deliver mail)But nobody should be using a HCT in snow and nobody should be taking unreasonable weight on a HCT,The job that we do should be able to be done by everyone you should not be a runner,He man or Wonder Women and i feel that sooner or later Royal Mail are going to find themselves in hot water,i can to a certain degree understand where the manager was coming from but he should have made adjustments to help out his behavior will be deemed as uncaring and Royal Mail will be deemed as a company that does not accommodate anyone and no company will keep getting away with only employing Linford Cristey, i feel for staff that are leaving the business because they feel unable to carry on doing the job.
