Driving licence checks done by OPG instead of manager

We are overdue the 6 monthly licence checks in our office (by about 2 years!!) and the DOMs latest and greatest idea is to get an OPG to do it during IPS time so as not to interfere with his eBay bidding, can he do this? It seem inappropriate for an OPG to carry out this task and it should be done by a manager imo. What is the RM policy on licence checks? I would have thought under the data protection act alone he is on dodgy ground for not safeguarding personal data by allowing OPG access to it.

All our licence checks, tacho card details etc are and always have been done by the Key/locker room staff who are all OPGs.

Is it right and proper ? - well I agree with you that it is not but that is RM policy. In a similar vein, if you look at who is doing your sick absence, holidays and wages etc, where I work they are all OPGs too.

i would be happy for a union rep to do it but not a normal opg

ask the manager if this opg has had traning and fully understands the data protection act 1998 in safe guarding peoples personal data

We have been given a form to fill in with our driving licence details to an outside agency who regularly check your licence for RM.
I have not filled it in as I have not heard of this company before.
I can't remember the name of the company but will look on form tomorrow.

Yes your tacho card does - it has name, dob, address and driver licence number printed on the front

anyone can do them we are all coverd under the data protection act as soon as we sign for royal mail we cannot say anything about what we read with in royal mail

Yep, our rep essentially runs the office and this manager has offloaded all the office work onto locker or other staff so has virtually nothing to do himself. All he does is moan about how hard his job is even though he has it way easier than any other manager ever has, it is the first time in years that our office is fully staffed.

Licence checks are a managers responsibility,they are his/her fleet. He should be requesting this responsibility to his DSM as "release". If the HSE come in..it is the managers name on the block!
