manager wants to cancel my leave

I have a weeks annual leave booked which runs from saturday to saturday. My acting manager has today told me that i may not be able to have the first day off as we dont have staff to cover. this leave was booked on the annual leave sheet months ago with our proper manager (who is now off long term sick, which is why we have an acting manager at present). Please tell me this is not legal.

I don't know about legal, but if it's booked then it's booked, he can ASK you to come in but i don't think he has grounds to force you. you obviously booked a week and a day nothing wrong with that, ask him is he going refund the £3000 holiday to Bahamas then?

If you want to take holiday

You must give your employer advance notice that you want to take holiday. This notice should be at least twice as long as the amount of holiday you want to take. For example, you should give two weeks' notice for one week's holiday.

Your employer can refuse permission for your holiday as long as they give you notice which is at least as long as the holiday requested. So to refuse a request for a week's leave, they would have to tell you a week in advance.

Your contract may set out other rules about when you can take your holiday. This is allowed so long as the rules don't effectively prevent you from taking holiday at all.

just to add, they cant just cancel one day of your leave with one day notice, you booked 8 days, so they need to give 8 days notice,

this is just the legal stand point

THE EMPLOYER CAN REFUSE THE HOLIDay, that is correct

but

at the time you booked your holiday, not further down the line

they can ask you to belate your leave, but not force

you booking your holiday in advance in a sense is a contract and if booked on the system , then its excepted you will take your leave on that date

the employer has had ample oppertunity to resource staffing levels to cover your leave so the staffing excuse is bovine excrament

if your holiday is booked say to oz, then royal mail could end up with a claim for damages

just remind your manager on these issues and update youir thread

If it's been booked months in advance and is on the AL sheet they can't change it without your permission.
Get your rep to tell him so.

thanks everyone. I will go to work tomorrow and make it clear that i will be on annual leave and hopefully that will be the end of the matter. If i wasn't going away and had nothing planned then I probably would work to help the office out, but a trip is booked so I am going to go and enjoy it.

I used to think like that.
But, at the risk of sounding mercenary, I would not 'help the office out' whether I was actually going away or not.
You don't owe RM any favours, and your free time is - or should be - precious.
Do you really think, if RM decided to close your office and make everyone compulsorily redundant, they'd say "oh, but let jxb keep his job, because he postponed a day off to help RM out that time' ??

RUBBISH They cannot deny you annual leave if it is already booked i would suggest taking out a grievance against this very manager if i were you! I'd consult your local union rep about the issue as well.

the can cancel annual leave as long as they give the proper notice

but if they did without good reason then yes a grievance would probably be sucessfull

Now i know how long it would be if i've booked it,am just interested in whether it's the same time i'm thinking about which is 'you can f**k rite off' time.
