Manager wants to "tie up" my delivery.
Hello to you all. I'm having a problem, at my DO, at the moment. My walk goes over my time, and I'm deciding to "break off" from delivery. I keep telling managment the stiuation, that the walk is to big and should be tested. They just keep refering to geo route says it can be done on time. Anyway, a tatic they are using now is, being told to have my full meal relief before I "tie up" my walk. A manager "ties up" my delivery while I have my meal relief. I would prefer to have 20 mins meal relief before I leave the office and 20 mins while I out on delivery. Also I don't like another person to "tie up" my delivery. I'ts just a nasty tatic from managmaet to prevent me from "breaking off". Can managment do this?? Thanks for any replys.

Re: Manager wants to "tie up" my delivery.
you tie up the delivery, not a manager
this would have been decided in the iwt elemant
have you spoken to your rep
get the whole 8 hour duty tested properly
how does your office have its meal relief at the moment
20-20
or 40 before you leave the office

Been telling them for weeks, to test it. They just won't do it. My CWU rep has been on to my DOM about it. Other posties are having the same problem. Not just me. Meal relief is suppose to be 20-20 according to 318's

this is happening all over the country
the revision is flawed by design
you cant get a round peg in a square hole
get your rep to put in a stage 1 disagreement and make sure your rep informs the area rep first
i have done three disagreements so far as my office is under the revision process at the moment
all disagreements upheld
status quo maintained

So your manager wants to break employment law regarding meal relief (if working six hours or more, a 20 minute break should be taken in the middle of the working day) and do OPG work (tieing up your walk)? Quality!

erm manager not breaking employment law in anyway by what the OP said, full meal break before i tie up my walk is what op said, so assuming he is on an 8 Hour day, that would be approximately 2.5-3hours into his day, so that is not against the law to do that, there is no definition of what "in the middle of the working day" actually means other than not added at the start or end of the shift and also doesnt actually mean your not allowed to work 6 hours without a break, ie on a nine hour shift you could have a 20 min break after 2 and half hours and then work 6 hours 10 min and its perfectly legal (that would be if company only gave you 20min)
as for him doing OPG work yeah agree with you there, get the part timers in the office to put grievance in on that one as its potentially depriving them of extra hours

Re: Manager wants to "tie up" my delivery.
If a screw has to tie up your walk while you are having your break then the duty is 40 mins too long.
Not that we'd let that happen at our place, rep really needs to cause a stir,or a bigger stir than what he's causing now.

It's good to get these types of threads, the ridiculous my manager said bollox, so we can reassure ourselves that while the world is falling apart, Royal Mail managers are still being the low-life C***S they have always been.

The daily grind of having to argue your case with an intellectual pigmy of a line manager is physically and emotionally draining.

Re: Manager wants to "tie up" my delivery.
If the whole 40 minutes of meal relief is being taken in one go on an 8-hour duty, I would make the middle of the working day 3hrs40mins to 4hrs20mins into the day. So, given that 8-hour contracts should not be starting until at least 0600 Mon-Fri, this single break before delivery should not be starting until around at least 0940. Yeah, right, that's likely!zx135 wrote:IloveMYredTROLLEY! wrote:So your manager wants to break employment law regarding meal relief (if working six hours or more, a 20 minute break should be taken in the middle of the working day) and do OPG work (tieing up your walk)? I don't know how anyone could work like that, taking their whole break allowance before delivering a single letter, especially if the depot has had its P&L revision and therefore almost certainly has longer delivery spans. I need my recharge breaks during the delivery span to make it through each and every day, if I had to deliver the whole walk in one continuous hit I'd expect to slow considerably towards the end and no doubt be more prone to long term health issues.

Re: Manager wants to "tie up" my delivery.
I AM AT 2 AND 8 WITH THE REVISION PROPOSALS AT THE MOMENT IN OUR OFFICE
I WANT THE FULL ALLOCATION OF 40 MINUTES PRIOR TO THE STAFF GOING OUT WRITTEN INTO THE 318
IT DOES NOT MEANT THEY HAVE TO TAKE THERE BREAK BUT THEY CAN IF THEY WANT TO. WE STILL HAVE A STAFFED CANTEEN IN THE MORNINGS AND IT IS HER JOB ALSO IME LOOKING AFTER
ALSO CUSTOM AND PRACTICE COMES INTO THE EQUATION OF HAVING THIS 40 MINUTE BREAK BEFORE DEPARTURE
THAT WAY IN THE DELIVERY SPAN (FIRST TO LAST LETTER) ROYAL MAIL HAS TO PUT IN A RESOURCE BREAK, CALL OF NATURE ETC

Re: Manager wants to "tie up" my delivery.
Surely the Manager will say he is merely utilising all the indoor working that he can? I would truly love to put a grievance in for each duty this is happening to. At present the Manager is Really trying hard to cut back our Part Timers hours. Most have been put onto Delivery Only and their Duties are therefore Thrown Off and Bagged up by Managers, and a few of their "Helpful" Friends!zx135 wrote: As for him doing OPG work yeah agree with you there, get the part timers in the office to put grievance in on that one as its potentially depriving them of extra hours
I agree with you ZX that it's depriving PTers of the opportunity to earn a few extra hours, but that's the way the Manager wants it!

Managers Performing OPG Work
1. Managers will not take on any kind of OPG work, unless under extreme circumstances where the USO is considered to be under a severe threat.
2. A daily meeting will take place between the local management team and the local CWU Rep to discuss if there is a threat to the USO and of any need for managers to carry out OPG work.
3. Any OPG work carried out by managerial grades will be logged and signed off by the DOM and the local rep whenever (2) is deemed necessary.
4. A joint CWU/RM report of OPG work undertaken by managers at Delivery Office will be sent to the DSM and the CWU Area Rep providing a demonstrable account of what work was carried out and why. Traffic levels and staff profile for the affected days will form part of this report.
Try getting an agreement like this in your office. (Thanks Fishtank)
Also by performing OPG work your manager is artificially boosting your EP. You will have to maintain/improve on this EP.
Ask him how he thinks he will manage that. Is he considering delivering the duty as well?

Re: Manager wants to "tie up" my delivery.
Thank You Very Much Clash
Judging by your post no Manager should be doing any OPG work unless the office is really struggling? Our manager is merely using it as a tool to help save his budget while depriving Pters of OT which the majority are quite happy to do, but are prevented from doing.
I think I'll probably have to take this up with the Area Rep as I'm rapidly losing faith in our Local Rep. I know it's easy to sit on the side lines and slag people down and I'm seriously looking at the elections. I believe many Local Reps have simply had it easy for many years, and are simply not equipped to deal with the amount of crap being dished out by RM.
I'd also be interested if any members have experience of trying to get an equal and fair distribution of Over Time in their Office. Doesn't help when your Rep works his day off for SA! No wonder he wasn't too keen on an Aggregated Over Time list!
Links appreciated. Can the Area Rep have much influence in trying to sort these problems in an Office or is it the old "Local Agreements" chestnut?

Re: Manager wants to "tie up" my delivery.
I recently managed to get all the office OT (prep, IPS etc, excluding people covering own walks on day off, which is fair enough) on a rota of willing part timers.Dorset Plodder wrote:

Area reps were next to useless helping me with that one, previous DOM was a twat about it. We got a new DOM, at our first resourcing meeting we thrashed it out, and four weeks later or so it's pretty even, apart from one wee snag.
What swung it for us was having a load of pssed off part timers. And a new DOM.

Re: Manager wants to "tie up" my delivery.
Thanks for the info Marston. We haven't got a new DOM ..but we've certainly got some pissed of PTers!
I think we'll probably give the ADR an opportunity to see what he can do...what happened with your Local Rep, was he any help?
Main problem is New PTers who are not in the Union.....don't know their entitlements...and are worried about not getting their Temporary contacts renewed. RM know this and really takes the piss!
It's hard to get them motivated to work together and stand up for their rights! Christ it's Dickensian!
