shambles ?
our office is very small,but in all the years ive worked there never known it to be in such a sorry state,full timers finishing before part timers,staff have left and never been replaced,4 dutys in the office at the mo that have not been filled up with permanent staff,bickering,backstabbing,different doms,2 dutys still being lapsed.on a pesonnal note have never been so stressed,i deliver on my own duty most of the time on a cycle,my biggest regret all them years ago was driving for royal mail,at the moment covering 3 different van/driving duties,but strange as it seems the smallest of these dutys are stressing me out bigtime,its all down to these stupid 9 o clockers,have to do them all for the office,going to industrial estate with poxy maps trying to find the delivery point its a nightmare.i am thinking of giving up driving for royal mail,can i do this ? would it be a good idea,any advice welcomed.p.s one thing i am going to start to do is work to time on these dutys,until i am back on my own duty again.

If it's regarding the driving question,it's very hard to give it up,especially nowadays.
You could try going to your doctors,explain the situation and try and get a note stating that in the interests of your health you can't drive anymore.
I can't see any manager in the business just taking you off driving cause you're pissed off with it,i know you're stressed with it but they will only see you as pissed off with it.
As for the rest,it's Royal Mail.

The daily grind of having to argue your case with an intellectual pigmy of a line manager is physically and emotionally draining.

Yes but there are risks involved.comeracing wrote: cheers postman,just wondering a collegue of mine refused to hand his driving licence in when his check was due,was told he would be suspended from driving,he has never driven a van since ? is this an option
If your parent D.O. has a shortage of drivers you could end up being farmed out to another unit.
It's unlikely but possible.
Dealing with drivers who invalidate themselves from driving
This is not a new problem for Royal Mail, but the increased numbers of vans in your operation may make the problems associated with this more acute. Guidance on how to deal with this situation will vary, depending on the nature of how the licence has been invalidated.
However, as a principle, all reasonable steps will be made to find alternative duties within the parent unit for people who can no longer perform a driving duty. Licences may be invalidated for many reasons – common situations include:
1. Alcohol & Drugs
2. Medical condition
3. Driving offences, e.g. civil speeding points.
Cases can be complicated, and there will be situations which occur that are not covered in the list above. Contact the People Contact Services (0845 6060603, postline 5456 7100) for expert advice in these cases.
section three guidance for DOMs
(NOT to be circulated around the office)
Please find below answers to some of the more common questions that managers ask when they are going through a delivery methods revision. For more comprehensive policy advice, please refer to the various information guides such as the people issues paper. Speak to your local planner if you do not have a copy of this.
Q. What if an individual is unable to drive i.e. no driving licence or cannot drive for health reasons?
A. If there are employees in your unit that are unable to drive you will need to consider what other duty options are available. You may need to accommodate these employees on shared routes as a planned non driver. (There is a limit to the number of non drivers you can accommodate on shared deliveries. It is, therefore, recommended that this is not an option to employees that can drive but choose not to.) You should explore what other opportunities there are to accommodate the individual within your office. If individuals cannot be accommodated in your office, you may be able to accommodate them via a move to another unit within a reasonable distance, where suitable work is available. Where this is not possible an employee may effectively become surplus and in this instance you should take advice from your Regional ER/IR Manager.

Re: shambles ?
alot of drivers have had enough you could try the stress problem but it takes a while.
if not ask your doctor that when driving the diesal fumes are effecting your breathing,
he may send a report to your office stating that you should not be driving,
but be careful they put you on a petrol van instead.
or the best one is to have some accidents in your van (bollards,trees,lamposts,or smash a few
vans up in the yard) but make sure you have some duties non driving at your office.
also to get you off the driving will save royal mail the driving allowance.

The societies of consumption and squandering of material resources are incompatible with the idea of economic growth and a clean planet.

Re: shambles ?
another classic what drivers dont get driving allowance yet still drive for royal mail
have your tongues been cut out if no allowance you dont drive or say to your guvnor
if he dont pay the allowance you want overtime for the amount owed.
someone asked about getting off driving well what a great way to come off driving
at the end of the day most managers are failed postman or postwomen just cause they
wear a suit does not mean they can have the final say on everything and treat you like s**t.

Driving allowance? What driving allowance?
(I think it's at this point in the thread that someone comes on and tells us that we need to grow a pair.
)
Must be part of those London bonuses that POSTMAN's always refering to.

Driving Allowance for vans disappeared for new drivers under the Way Forward.POSTMAN wrote:Loads of drivers all over the UK must still get driving allowance.
For the rest of us it was frozen at sick squid.
Even outside Watnotland.
DRIVING ALLOWANCE
The new package will retain non-pensionable assigned allowances as personal reserved rights for the following employees:
• £6.00 per week (pro-rata to conditioned hours) for employees graded PMN/women, who are not receiving another assigned non-shift allowance, and whose substantive job on the 31 January 2000 involves driving a Royal Mail van (of less than 3.5 tonnes) for at least two conditioned hours per day. This will include reserve jobs dedicated to covering driving duties as of 31 January 2000;
• £6.00 per week (pro-rata to conditioned hours) for employees graded PMN/women or Streamline Level 4, who are not receiving another assigned non-shift allowance nor the £6.00 for van driving, and whose substantive job on 31 January 2000 involves driving a fork-lift truck for at least two conditioned hours per day. This will include reserve jobs dedicated to covering fork-lift duties as of 31 January 2000;
These allowances will be frozen and retained on a personal rights bases by these employees only so long as they remain in the same job as on 31 January 2000. There will be no payments for hours worked on overtime or Scheduled Attendance. These assigned allowances will continue to be paid during annual leave and other paid absence. Employees on rotations as of 31 January 2000 will receive an average payment.
