Managers doing checks in own car
Does a manager have to use a RM vehicle when they decide its time to check that we are all doing the job properly on delivery, or can they use their own car with business insurance?

Re: Managers doing checks in own car
As long as they're insured they can, it's up to them if they want to use their car.

What's happening to justify driving around checking up on employees? When this happened to us it was linked to refusing to absorb during the summer.

Johnny: Whadda you got?

dont need business insurance, in fact its a bit of a myth with royalmail, they have their own insurance which covers you when using private vehicles(yeah needs to be within certain conditions) but business insurance is not actually necessary as they are covered by rm's business insurance, celerycelery wrote:Does a manager have to use a RM vehicle when they decide its time to check that we are all doing the job properly on delivery, or can they use their own car with business insurance?
basically the way it works is you can only be covered once for insurance even if you have multiple policies, so even in civvy street you could take out two policys to cover your car, but you then have an accident, obviously both dont pay out, there would be an arguement between both companies which ones was liable, so RM have 3rd party cover for all their employees (less those in offices that have had a DM revision under bt2010) so all employees are covered as having third party business cover any way, only difference would be is if manager took out business cover it would cover him and his vehicle ONLY in event of accident as he had no cover covering that, but he would have cover covering third party so he would not be breaking law if he used his own vehicle (again as long as he conformed to the terms of RM's bond)

Nothing would come of that whatsoever. The police would assume it's either a customer seeing how near you are to his house or (correctly), a manager or some RM official checking up on you. They could even suspect you knew this and warn you to stop buggering about.

It was my understanding Royal Mail's insurance bond only covers OPG grade(?)
Unless a criminal act is suspected and authorisation has been given from RM's top brass they are on very dodgy ground monitoring you at work. You could argue its a breach of section 8 of the data protection act and a violation of your human rights.

But, and I am not condoning this practice, wouldn't they claim they were fulfilling their "duty of care" responsibilities. Only pointing this out because managers do have to do some "monitoring" in any line of work, how else could they Manage people and tasks otherwise.wingmanchillian wrote:It was my understanding Royal Mail's insurance bond only covers OPG grade(?)

If you wanted to question the legality of them then I think fairness and whether they were also watching others, would be one of the few avenues you could look at. The other defence of course RM would use which as you have pointed out is the prevention or investigation of crime.
I have been followed by management, and to be honest I couldn't give a flying fig why they are following me. I do the job correctly, I don't door step, I don't dawdle and I work hard, if they are trying to catch me out doing anything dodgy they'll have a hard time.

No it covers anyone undertaking work for Royal Mail

Sorry Data Protection act does not applie in slightest to this, how are they mishandling any data?
and very unlikely you would ever get a judgement of breach of the human rights act for a boss checking up that his employees were doing the job they were paid to do

Re: Managers doing checks in own car
I think we are all missing a trick here, does anybody really think that RM really cover Managers to use their own car to check up on us?

Pretty sure you are wrong.zx135 wrote:dont need business insurance
Might only be for vehicles conveying mail (or even just for the mail itself in the event of loss), not for transport use.
Check a T&S form, when you go to put in mileage, it tells you to ensure you have CAT2(?) business insurance.

Re: Managers doing checks in own car
If a postie needs to go through the motions to have RM insurance to use his car then a screw has too as well.

It's good to get these types of threads, the ridiculous my manager said bollox, so we can reassure ourselves that while the world is falling apart, Royal Mail managers are still being the low-life C***S they have always been.

The daily grind of having to argue your case with an intellectual pigmy of a line manager is physically and emotionally draining.

Re: Managers doing checks in own car
Most people only have insurance covering the following,
Social,
pleasure &
Domestic.
If the said boss is using his own car and had an accident, he is NOT doing any of these if he is following someone on the job.
It is no different from a police officer who finds himself using his own car, coming across a crime in progress and following another vehicle he suspects of being involved in that crime. If he has an accident, his insurance does not cover him from the point were he decides to use his own car 'as a police car'.
That is why Royal Mail used to use little red fiesta's with the yellow EIIR badge on the door or OMV pool cars, insured by RM.
If you suspect a manager of following you,, ask him why? Front him. If he is doing something genuine and you are doing you're job correctly, there's nothing to worry about.
However if he does this more than once in a short period of time, it could be interpreted as HARASSMENT, in which case you could take him down the conduct code if you feel that this behaviour towards you is unwanted by you because his actions are causing you harassment, alarm or distress.
