How long does it take to get offered a full time contract

I am just wondering how long you have to work on a part time contract before you get offered a full time contract at the RM. I mean I really want a full time job, and the guys at work say that they have been part time for three - four years !!, this is just way too long to wait for me, so I have decided to now look for a full time job elsewhere, while I am working part time as a postie.

without sounding negative, the chance of being made full time are virtually none. Royal mail want to cull hours not increase them. sorry to be so blunt. There are people at my DO who have been waiting 15 years and still ain't full time.

The only chance of getting a FT contract is to keep an eye out for when a really bad FT duty (if you have FT duties rather than FT Posties) comes up and apply for it. I did that and got a FT contract very quickly indeed. However people at my office who did not like the look of the duty are still on PT contracts and some have been there since PT duties were introduced.

Suppose it depends what the PT contract is. You do hear of people still managing to start on 36 hour contracts, that's not too bad with a bit of OT is it? No so good if it's only 22.5 though!

A lot of people from my office got bumped up to full time as our revisions were kicking off, me included. We were lucky I guess but it can happen, I had been with RM for about 7-8 months.

The vacant FT duties in my office haven't been put up for pick since around 2003-4, they've been filled with temporary FT or PT staff.

Some of the guys in my office are 10 years in with no sign of a FT duty.

Exactly what I did, full time in well under a year and I've never looked back.

I am full time reserve and I was the last full time they employed at my office, as rest are part timers after me.

Reason is Royal Mail want to cut cost

Say you work in 6 weeks rotating duty (5 weeks in and 1 off) and work 30 hours a week and work extra for full time/fill up to 34 hours.

3.5 weeks X 10 = 35 hours (Annual leave)
1 week off for sick = 10 Hours
8 weeks off (for floating week) X 10 = 80 hours
Plus prorata on bonus and other stuff - let say 5 per week plus 100 from bonus

This is 125 hours saving = 3 weeks wages plus 360 pounds by not employing people on full time X 50 employees = lot of money for manager bonus.

We have a lad on 7hour contract and has been for 10 years and not even he has a chance of getting fulltime,i also understand that Royal Snail will not be taking on any f/t staff again.

It depends on the office. In my office all PT that want FT have got it within 6-18 months, one lad even got a FT monday to friday duty after less than 6 months. My office does seem to have a very high staff turnover, i have been there just under 5 years and I would say more than half the staff that were there when i started have left or retired.
