Had a chat wth the Office manager this morning...

As a newbie, done just over a week now, I noticed I still hadnt been paid for my training day in Bristol, which should have been on last weeks payslip but wasnt, not on this weeks either, so i asked for a brief chat this morning to query this and the mileage allowance, both have now been sorted.
While I was there I asked him whats the score with over time, as this week I have done 6 hours over already and still got tomorrow to come.
His reply was
"well its swings and roundabouts here, on quiet weeks we dont mind you knocking off early but on busier weeks like this week we expect you to stay on, so it should even itself out. Its just unfortunate you started this week when it has been a manic week"

He did show me a forecast sheet on the office wall that clearly shows our expected figures of mail were very high for this week compared to most others within a couple of month period.

So.... its unfortunate I started on a busy week

Ill give it a couple of months, if im continually doing extra hours ill have to ask for my contract to go up from the 28 im on to 35, whats the chances of that happening?!

before you ask, yes ive sent my union application off, not sure how much good that will do me though

Tell him 'bollox' you work extra then you get paid for it, he's trying it on because you're new. The swings and roundabouts rule only works from day to day and only for a maximum of 30 minutes which has to be paid back that week (and only in cases of emergencies ie. a van breaking down).

Most weeks between now and xmas will be manic.
In order to recoup the 6 hrs o/t you have done this week. you would have to finish over an hour early every day next week. That ain't going to happen.
Swings and roundabouts for the odd 10 minutes maybe. For 6 hours.......I don't think so.
And as for increasing your contracted hours......

It's not 'day to day'

Swings and bloody roundabouts is about flexibility. That is when they can 'ask' you to go over by 30 mins. Because of circumstances (as noted above) . Anything else is bollocks.

Bottom line ; you should be paid for the excess you worked. I would complain. But would understand if you did not

Just tell him that if you dont get paid overtime, you are not going to do it, and that you will be taking your six hours back next week. Then wait for the tantrum.

I agree with all of the above comments, but will add one point..... If you are on a temporary contract just be carefull, these people are not nice and on the whole a bunch of power bullies, who could quite easialy terminate your temporary contract.
So my advice wait till you get your permenant contract, wait till your union membershipis is validated..... THEN tell him BO....KS.......

Well I understand what you are all saying, but I've been out of work 2 months, I'm on a temp 28 hour contract and I can I'll afford to start making an issue out of it. I want to be seen as a guy that is worth keeping on when my contract expires (8 months) as I do love the job, having worked in retail all my life it's a real change and there seems to be a lot of good guys working there.

I agree with all of the above comments, but will add one point..... If you are on a temporary contract just be carefull, these people are not nice and on the whole a bunch of power bullies, who could quite easialy terminate your temporary contract.

The time a permanent contract comes you could have done a months wages for free, . Temporary contract or not you have to put your foot down from the start.

at the end of the day temp contact or not you need to be paid for the hours you do

I suggest this ( as you seem a reasonable chap) tell him that you don't mind working overtime but you expect to paid for it but if the 'swings and roundabouts on a weekly basis' is a RM policy ask him to give you this in writing

if he wont then insist he pays the overtime for the week just worked and tell him you are more than happy to work to your time on any day of any week that you should happen to finish early in the future ( at this time of year this probably aint gonna happen!) even if it means coming back to the office and sorting

oh and keep a diary of all your overtime worked literaly a diary put down the walk you have done and the overtime you have done on each given day

don't worry about your contract worry about being paid for the hours you have worked
