Your day off and your round doesn't get done?

Post by DaveF14 »

What happens when your day off floater calls in sick on your round and it gets failed or not covered?

Just happened to me and had 2 days mail to deliver today. Can I take that mail out of the frame and leave it and just deliver that days mail? Can I claim a days overtime cause im doing 2 days worth of work?

Just take out up to your contracted time, or if you want o/t ask for it to be authorised either way it's not really your problem but theirs

It's only 2 days work if it takes you 2 days to deliver it....did it?

The boss wasn't in. Finished way past my time and put down 4 1/2 hours for the delivery that hadn't been done. Pissed off all day knowing I had every door almost and 2 days of packets!

Watch yourself, only put down 4 1/2 hours if it actually took you that amount of time or you could find yourself on a conduct charge and out on your arse. I'll go along with FT on this, only claim what it took you or just leave behind that which would take you over your time.

Regardless of whether the delivery hasn't been done for 2 days or 2 months you just go in and do what's there to be done. If you can't get it all done within your contracted hours for that day see your manager. It's up to him/her to either offer you overtime(if you want it) or make other arrangements.

You are obliged to deliver what you can within your hours - nothing more and certainly nothing less.

Not so bad when you've got 2 days mail to Deliver, probably book an extra hour or two. BIG PROBLEM when no-ones thrown it off and you've got 2 days mail to Prep! :no no That's definitely a pain in the Bum.

To be honest Dorset...i would love that.
My optimum delivery span would then be about half an hour...minus travelling time. :chuckle

:Very Happy
With the P&L revisions I'm constantly reminded of a time in the mid 90's when our office couldn't agree on guaranteed OT at Xmas (remember that?). We decided to work to rule instead - 9:30 cut off 1st del, no cars etc. After a few days the backlog was so big that we'd go in, IPS, sort our delivery, bag up and spend ages waiting for a van out due to the car ban. The optimum delivery span ended up as get dropped off, cross the road then get the bus straight back into the office without making one call :chuckle

:chuckle :chuckle I remember it well, we were still on a 6 day week then and our finishing time was about 11.40 or something - one bloke was adamant he wasn't going to work any overtime, he wasn't known as a workhorse, anyway they begged and begged for him to take some of his delivery - which he did - one bundle and booked 30 minutes overtime - it happened to be the bundle in the street he lived in. How many would get away with that these days?

Happy days indeed - but the job was so reliant on people using private cars, skipping breaks, ignoring H&S rules and starting early that once you stopped doing all that for any length of time it was perfectly possible to do the kind of thing you've mentioned - and be entirely in the right.

Once people get over the fact that early finishes are a thing of the past this job quickly becomes a doddle again - you just need to learn the rules and stand up for yourself.

The new order is a frightening place for some charles. They have part time contracts and are more or less coralled into working any and all hours requested.
Some have 25 hour contracts and are working 40+ hours a week and the union response is non-existant. After the last revision some part timers were made up to 40 hours BUT only temporarily and that was 10/11 months ago and they are still temporary. That was because the workload was supposed to even out......well it has, so why have the contracts not been substantiated.
