returning to royal mail after medical retirement

hi,

a number of years ago i injured my back twice in the same short period.the second time put me on the sick for nearly 6 months,the result of which was a medical severence payment and i was finished from royal mail. it took a while to get back to full fitness but now i would like to return to royal mail in any job that they offer me.

i have been informed that this is possible by someone who works for the mail but does anyone know of anyone who has actually returned to royal mail after a medical retirement,if so what sort of problems did they face (if any).

i am fully fit and recovered now by at least 6 years and i really miss the job so would appreciate anyones help on this subject.

You can apply but must declare your previous employ and sick record and usually that will be enough to put you the bottm of any DOMs acceptance list. 'The best indicator of future performance is past performance!!!!!!'

Welcome Woodford. I wouldn't bother mate. I know we all need a job but you don't need this one. The amount of work that is now being put onto Posties is unbelievable. I would have thought that anyone that declared a dodgy back, although fully recovered, would be avoided by RM, simply on the grounds of avoiding any future problems.

I wouldn't be too upset though as this job is really going down the toilet, and will not even be recognisable as the job you left! Good Luck with you job search.

its been around 8 years since i left, has it really gone that bad as working there in the late nineties was great, the best job i had.

Try reading through some of the threads about P&L and that will tell you everything (Dundee is a place to start your search).

Workload is horrendous. Between 2 of you, you are now expected to do between 12 and 30 bags, as well as bulk businesses and all large parcels. Must be able to do this at a speed of 3.87 mph no matter what. All work is now expected to be completed at 100% BSI. Welcome to being paid to kill youself! My advice is dont reapply unless you are really desperate. Sorry to be so negative but that is the nature of the beast now.

Indeed sadly the Dorset plodded has said it how it Is :( I loved the job but now it's chaos and I'm sure the old royal mail has finished and this new one wants younger people I.e school Leavers to rush round and then when there knees get worn , get next batch in etc etc ! Most of us can't understand or believe what is going on and it's all very sad and upsetting to see it all being ruined when so many of us do a good job , sorry mate but look fir something else if you can.

it was hard work when i was there as there was still some weight to carry around but it was also nice and relaxed,im actually quite shocked as it sounds like a completely different company.i think all big companies are going like this, ive worked for a few multinational electronics companies and everything is to a time limit,daily statistics etc...etc...

why is all this happening, is it just bad management or is the royal mail in financial trouble again?

Both. Dont even have time for a pee these days never mind actually talking to a customer. Only been here 6 years myself. Used to love this job now i cant stand it anymore. Cant wait to get out.

Both. The weight would probably be less of a problem because of the trolleys of one sort or another, though they too have been reported as being liable to back strain.

i'll probably still go for it even if its just till i get something else as at the moment poor work conditions still beats the dole.such a shame to hear its gone like all the other big companies, i thought the mail would remain a bit old oldschool.probably explains why our postie always looks knackered.

However you would have to do some research as at least 50% of them are closing - if not more. No compulsory redundancies but who would want to get a job and then find you have to travel for an hour to get it too it after only just starting.
