I always calculate deductions as about a quarter of the gross amount and would expect 8 or 9 pounds to be deducted for every 40 pounds earned as a postie. This is a very rough guide to make a quick mental calculation. My normal gross is around 400 a week and I get just over 300 after deductions so my estimate works rather well.

You're reading it incorrectly, if you do OT you will get about £9.50 an hour gross more than normal, after tax and NI you will take home about £7 more, check your previous payslips where you've not done OT, you'll see what you've done wrong :)

By my reckoning, you pay about £2.90 in tax and NI for each hour of OT (1st 10 hours).

Not been impressed with overtime rate

On last floating week off I got paid for 36 hours and it is about 220 pounds extra. But it paid for my holiday next month. So I can't grumble, as I was planning to use revision / colleagueshares / bonus money to pay for it but didn't get anything this year apart from 200 pounds.

It was his 'rest week' it's just the same as us doing our 'rest day'.

I take home a bit less but I buy extra holidays so it probably works out about the same.
