Re: Special Leave
By the book you will get the funeral as paid special leave and the rest will be unpaid or annual leave.
If you have a decent manager you may get the whole lot as paid.
When my wife's mother passed away my manager gave me a full week,no questions asked,he even said take as long as you need but that was 10 years ago and things are different now.

Re: Special Leave
For a more distant relative e.g. parent in law, grandparent, aunt, uncle- one day with pay.
Discretion for additional time off in exceptional circumstances where care of a dependant is involved, however where prolonged time off is required this might be without pay or from holiday entitlement

Re: Special Leave
Thanks for the replies
When my father died I received special leave but when my uncle who was the last of my dad's many brothers and sisters passed away they wouldnt let me go and I can tell you I was mightily upset that I couldn't attend his service. So it seems that it is at the manager's discretion and at thast time they must have been stretched.Ordinarily I would have said fu I am going but past battles with management meant that I was unsure of my ground and I think I may have been near to a stage 3 at the time.
I agree RM has changed and our decent managers probably have less discretionary options than they previously had which is a great shame.

From recent memory the rules state that you are entitled to 5 days paid leave if you are arranging the Funeral. I am pretty certain that the criteria is printed on the Special Leave form. However as previously stated whilst a decent Manager would happily go along with this, unfortunately we are lumbered with the worst Managers in the world bar none!

If arranging a funeral up to one week with pay, which includes the bereavement, arranging the funeral and any other duties (This is for arranging funerals of next of kin or as an executor).midegarelu wrote: From recent memory the rules state that you are entitled to 5 days paid leave if you are arranging the Funeral. For the death of next of kin and blood relative, (spouse, civil partner, long standing unmarried relationship, child, parent, sibling) up to one week with pay (No additional week is allowed if the person is arranging the funeral).

Re: Special Leave
Again thanks for all comments , my situation is complicated because to attend the funeral would require a minimum of three days , two days for travel and one for the funeral and that excludes possible cultural obligations which might mean more than one days attendance for the service

Re: Special Leave
This situation must have happened many times to other posties re having to go abroad particularly because posties often have family all over the world these days, it must be an impossible situation if cultural reasons demand the funeral within 24 hours and you have to try and get there.

Re: Special Leave
It isn't,it's in the agreement (re:close relative)as Clash posted. So it seems that it is at the manager's discretion

It's good to get these types of threads, the ridiculous my manager said bollox, so we can reassure ourselves that while the world is falling apart, Royal Mail managers are still being the low-life C***S they have always been.
