Do you have to work over your time and not get paid??? Help!

Im a new 20 hr part timer, been doing it for 4 weeks now... Since i started some days I go over my contracted hours by 1- 2 hrs, I have been logging down the time i go over and telling my manager about it, at first he got really iffy about paying it, its a struggle to get it paid most times. Last week he said to me he's going to Stop paying me overtime for going over my contracted hours.... can he do this? He says all the walks should be done within 3 hrs....but i cant see how that is possible

.....I get paid from 9am-1pm, by the time I have bundled up the walk plus absorption extra that i get nearly every day and get out, its gone 10am by the time i get to start the walk.... I just want to know do i HAVE to work past 1pm for free if I still have mail left? what to i do? My manager says that if i dont, Royal Mail will just see it as ' i cant do the job properly' ...... would really appreciate some advice, thanks!

All over time is voluntary , join the union and see your Rep. If you are a new starter on a tempory contract the manager will try and frighten you into doing work for free , but why should you work for free to pay his bonus. Tell your manager you will not be working over your time if he isn't paying you , prep your mail as normal , when it is all in the fitting go and see him and ask what he wants you to take. Make sure you have the rep there when you do this as a witness.

Thanks for the reply, im just confused on what to do, because another postie told me, if you are too slow they will sack you, but really im going as fast as i can without running, so am i right in saying that if he refuses to pay me after 1pm, I am within my rights to bring whatever is left, back to the sorting office at that time and leave?

3 DELIVERY

3.1 PRIOR TO COMMENCEMENT
a) Where an employee feels that on completion of preparation he/she may experience difficulty in completing his/her delivery within the authorised time allotted, he/she should approach his/her manager as soon as possible before setting out on delivery. It will be for the manager to discuss any problem and advise the employee what particular action should be taken.

b) When an individual has requested assistance on delivery, but the manager feels that assistance is not required, this decision along with the advice given to the employee will be recorded and associated with the daily traffic volume records. The employee can have access to this record and may ask to see it prior to commencement of his/her delivery. In addition to recording the employee’s request, the employee will be instructed to ring his/her local manager prior to a specified time or as soon as possible if full completion of delivery workload within the time allotted proves not to be possible.

3.2 AFTER COMMENCEMENT OF DELIVERY
a) If an individual is prevented from completing their delivery for any reason, it is essential that this is reported immediately either by returning to the office or by telephone (telephone costs will be refunded). A written record will be kept.

b) All employees should be informed of the local authorised arrangements, in writing, preferably in plastic card form if available.

first tell him you f**k o** , then take your 20 min break before going out , and if he thinks your to slow ask him to come out and time the duty , dont work for nothing , cut off and take it back just tell him before you go out. dont be bullied by him.

Welcome Poozy..Remember in Royal Mail No one can hear you Scream! That's because you're drowned out by the rest of us screaming as well!!

Look at FishTank's advice and use it. Your Manager will probably crap himself when he realises you actually know your rights. Check out a few other posts on here and you'll see that Managers are always lying and cheating to try and save hours within their Office. What you have to bear in mind is if they can keep their Budget under a certain limit, for a certain period of time, they get paid a bonus. This is sometime thousands of pounds, so they will try anything to try and get you to reduce your hours/ work for nothing/ do more work in the same time...you get the picture?

I know it's easy to say, and we've all got bills to pay, but how badly do you need this job? It's not getting any better and will probably get worse in the short term. I suggest you try and find another PT job which you can "Fit In" around your 4 hours a day. Then you won't be under as much pressure to Kiss the Dims Ass. When he says "You've got work your contracted hours" all you say is "Fine I'm off home in 4 hours".

Your manager should expect a new start to be slower for a while. He should also expect to pay overtime because of this. I know it's easy for me to say and a lot harder for someone in your position to do but don't let him bully you. Tell him you're not prepared to work for nothing so you will have to leave some mail if he insists you finish at your contracted time. Get the union involved if necessary. Most DOMs will chance their arm in this kind of situation and if you let him bully you now you can look forward to more of the same in the future. Stand up to him and he'll probably look for easier targets.

Cheers for the advice guys, told him the basics today, he started off trying to have a go about me being slow, and how I should be able to do it in 3 and a half hrs, and he cant be paying me o/t....until i told him, I dont even have 3 and a half hrs of paid time, by the time i get out after bundling up, and told him when i took the job, i was told i turn up sign in and take the already loaded trolley and be on my way, not bundling it all up etc... so he turned heel and said oh ok if 'thats what you were told, then we will do that'....he tried implying that my review is coming up and if i dont speed up then... you get the idea....lets just see what happens...thanks for the advice boys! not gonna take this slave labour!
