What time do you usually finish your round ?

Just wondering what time you usually finish your round, I am only contracted for 22 hours a week, but today I started at 7.30am and did not finish until 3.30pm ! (heavy bank holiday mail !)

On weekdays I usually start at 9.00am and finish at around 3.00pm,
I have not been working as a postie for very long, so I am just getting used to the round I am on.
Anyway am I finishing to late ? I am going as fast as I can, but the round I am on seems very long with 15 streets all with over 40 houses.
Also I have not been claiming all the overtime ( I am only supposed to work for approx 4.5 hours a day) I am doing, should I begin to do this ?

I mean is there a limit to the overtime that you can claim, for example do the managers expect you to finish your round in a certain time, and if your always going over it, and trying to claim overtime, then will they argue that you should not be working so long or will they put this against you when the contract is up ?

Well I am currently working as a postie on a 3 month temp contract, while I finish my Phd in nuclear physics. I did my first degree in astrophysics through the OU and then got funding for my masters in photonics and also for PhD. Tough the funding ran out last October for my PhD, which is why I decided to get a part time job to support me while I wrote my thesis. Even tough there are jobs that I could apply for with better pay, I think I am going to stick being a postie for a while, simply because I enjoy the job, it beats sitting in front of a computer all day analyzing data, thats what I reckon anyway.

I decided to not tell the Royal mail about my qualifications when I applied, as I applied before and did not even get an interview, but when I did not mention my qualifications I got the job, anyway as I say I am really enjoying it

ah you telling us your working well over your 22 contracted hours and not booking overtime. if ya are then you defo get your contract renewed
as the dom will love you for making him plenty bonus.

Even guys with years in who should know better do it.
It's the path of least resistance syndrome.
I understand it but i don't get it...if that makes any sense.
I think it comes from looking round and seeing everyone stare at their shoes and shuffle off.
That's the embarrassing part...the lack of support from so-called workmates.

whats the matter with these people im sure not working for nothing not in this day and age.
i understand if its my fault its took me longer than usual then so be it it but if i go over my hours
because the day is heavy or been asked to come in early then yer im going to book.

No i mean they are frightened of the consequences of booking OT or cutting off and the feel they do not have the support of their colleagues/union rep when standing up to management.
It's a sad state of affairs all round...that's what's embarrassing.

I have only been working about two weeks, so I don't know the ins and outs of what I can expect etc etc.
Plus I would like to finish the three month contract off, because like most students I am in debt and need a decent source of income until I can finish my studies and get a job in my field.
So I am unsure about what happens if you pee the manager off by asking for overtime and always finishing my round late . I mean I am not really bothered about getting the contract renewed as long as I have had a t least a couple of months work, it is more of the manager finding a reason to sack me before the contract ends and before I can make some decent money to reduce my overdraft and make my bank balance look a bit nicer maybe even get into the black !

Anyway I am going to ask for overtime, stuff it, I should not be working for nothing, I know the manager wouldn't. If the manager wont give it then I'll bring the mail back when my time is up.

Make sure you tell your manager as soon as possible that you don't believe you will complete your duty in your contracted hours. Then ask him what he wants you to do.
Don't just bring mail back. They will call it "wilful delay" and they will sack you.

What's it normally like after a bank holiday? Does it normally get heavy on the Wednesday rather than the Tuesday after?

You just can't help some people though FT. A guy in our office constantly goes well over, it was sorted to get some removed from his walk and he said it 'didn't matter'

He goes in early, doesn't take a break and regularly finishes at 4pm+ (his p/l partner cuts off while he stays and delivers all the rest for free).

Runners get all the stick for spoiling the job, but what this guy is doing is even worse. I mean he isn't even making anything out of it, just f*cking up anyone else that does the walk as he never claims or cuts off. He is slow but the walk is also cr*p.

I find that everything advances a day so the easy Monday happens on Tuesday, the tons of SD we get on Tuesday comes on Wednesday and so on.

I start at 6am and normally finish between 13.30 and 14.00. That includes a 30 min meal break.

This weather: 6am start. Finish around 11am Monday-Wednesday (sometimes earlier on Tuesday) and Saturday. 12.30pm/1pm Thursday and Friday. Take 20 minutes meal relief before going out.
