Is unpaid overtime a common practice in sorting offices?

I was at an interview the other day and the manager told me that he doesnt pay overtime at his sorting office, he also said that Id probably go into overtime when im first starting off but I wont get payed for it, I'll only be payed for my contracted hours (P/T). He also mentioned that he's not once payed any of his workers any overtime.

Is this a common thing in Royal mail sorting offices? I was hoping to be able to work overtime up to near enough full time hours to earn more money but he basically said there would be no paid overtime there so thats a real downer for me.

If thats the way he speaks to u before u have the job, can u imagine how he'd speak to u once u are in ?
overtime isn't compulsory, never has been,
u get paid for the hours worked, do no more, simple as that,
i think it's disgusting that a manager is prepared to ask that at interview stage knowing full well candidates are desperate for work and he has them by the short and curlies !

They are sh1t scared to stand up for their legal rights (ie, refusing forced overtime paid or not) as managers are threatening that their contracts won't be renewed.

One new starter in an office near me was told that he'd have to "lick [the manager's] arse" on a daily basis if he wanted his contract extending, this was manager's words.

I'm sure the colleague in question knows his rights, and would love to tell manager to stick it up his arris, but he has a family to support.

TBH the union should be coming down on this crap from the top, apart from the fact it's illegal (with holding of wages) it's also morally wrong and is a sure way of creating a disaffected workforce.

surely its up to the old hands in the office to stickup for these temporary contractors,i no for sure if we heard a manager speak to somebody in our office like that, not matter who it was there be hell to pay. the other thing get them in the union not great at the moment i no but better than nowt

Okay, again, what we KNOW to be morally, and legally right, IS NOT the reality for most DO's.

The colleague I mentioned IS in the union, he went into the managers office with the rep and had a "normal" conversation.

The manager pulled him to one side later and told him in no uncertain terms that as he was only one of four people on these temporary contracts, it was up to his discretion which ones are renewed.

It doesn't mater one bit if anyone criticises management, complains, or even if the union go in, management are bullying and harassing like never before, THIS is the outcome of that sh1te agreement. The poor feckers on temp contracts just hope that they are not the one who will be released after 6 months, RM local management are playing them off against each other, deliberately.

Due to recent management changes in our office less people (not all) now start before their times not all the lapsing can be done in work time so some goes out on OT.

the only o/t paid in our office is for doing half a round or a bag of a duty that there is no cover for [usual suspects] .mind this is after you have done your own round and the lapsed part of another which in some cases trolley rounds can take you 15min to walk to . worked out with cwu rep,

Anyone working unpaid for overtime is stupid.
Cut off everyday at your finish time, they cant make you work it.
All the money the DOM saves goes in his bonus

Forced overtime, paid, or unpaid, is illegal, end of.

I am happy to cut off at my finish time every day, and will do so.

BUT, if I was on one of these temporary contracts, which ALL new starters seem to be taken on on, I might think differently. It really is just open season for managers to step up the bullying, and illegal working practises.

You complain about it, your contract ain't renewed.

You stick to your rights, your contract ain't renewed.

You refuse to work over unpaid, your contract ain't renewed.

It doesn't matter whaat the union say, it's down to managers to decide whether these temp contracts are extended, they know they wield the power, and they take the piss.

Can't understand why this is causing so much traffic.... they don't pay OT so what? smile get the job then when you have too much work and he says he doesn't pay OT you say "CUT-OFF"
