Graduate Managers

Hi everyone,

I've recently attended the Assessment day at Coton House for the Graduate Operations Scheme.

Just wondering, how posties view the managers and any tips for working at Royal Mail.

TBH it's not really a job that will allow you to actually manage, all you do is follow orders from above...............to the letter or you will get sacked. Better get yourself a job that will allow for actual management training............in a company that should still be about in a few years time.


BTW any of the graduate managers that I've had have been the weakest, most bullying people I've ever had the displeasure to meet, the phrase 'wouldn't piss on them if they were on fire' is one I would use for them.

Well speaking from personal experience we posties like nothing better than a graduate who takes on a managerial role. After spending years in the various aspects of RM Operations we absolutely value the input from new graduates and wonder how on earth we managed in the past with ex posties from the shop floor who had an understanding of the role.

I wonder why it is there are fewer and fewer posties taking up managerial positions - would it be that RM feel they can mould new blood into expecting the impossible without any qualms?

The obvious tip is get your hands dirty as quickly as possible.
It's difficult to respect a manager who doesn't have a working knowledge of the business.
Having said that the majority of managers who have progressed from the shop floor did so at a time when the job was entirely different so listening to their war stories can be fatal.
If you want to be a decent manager try to get a feel for our side of the fence.
If you want to progress in Royal Mail management....don't.

Is this a wind up? You are never going to fit in at being a manager if you give a monkeys what posties think or take any advice from them! Seriously though my advice would be "Always treat others as you would like to be treated yourself". That is the only way you will be able to run a productive office...and just remember a GOOD manager manages and a CRAP manager bullies.

At least it wasn't Media Studies............but that another argument altogether

Try and get a post in administration rather than working on the floor.If you do that then you'd probaly enjoy your job.If they do put you on the floor after a year ask your other uni. mate's how there career's are going.

Problem with graduate managers is they come into the business and have a propensity to try and tell us how we should do the job,most have never done a thing that remotely has any thing to do with the job,no disrespect to you but that is why the staff get the right royal hump,when you say manager it is more like spare part,generally you will get told what to do and you will tow the line because if you don't then you will not fit in or you will get pushed to the outside,the other thing is you will get pushed from office to office so you will never really settle.
My advice is be happy do whatever but remember us posties really don't appreciate being told how to do our job when we do it everyday and we don't like being told we should go faster or not to talk or being told to sort and not talk! that is a really annoying trait as most managers stand on the floor with their hands wrapped around a coffee cup and chat in groups of no less than 6,if you remember all these odds and ends you should do well.
