P&L when it's not a 'model week'?

Post by Hitcher »

So what are the actual, official plans when it's heavier?

Where do the extra hours/staff come from?

Which means what exactly?

Voluntarily going over up to 30mins and getting that 30mins back later that week?

That still wont help produce the extra hours needed to make it work though.

It means managers will try every bullying tactic they can to make people, especially them poor beggars on temporary contracts, to work over their time.

It means managers will drag you into the office for "counselling" (how thoughtful) if you are unable to complete your duty and lapsing within the time allotted, and it means that telling managers the time applies to model week traffic is not a good enough excuse for not completing.

Its a complete fkin shambles and the union should be ashamed they ever allowed this to go through.

No. Flexing up means they put in place the resources necessary to get the job done.
This could mean p/t staff brought in to help prep or on the IPS.
If the model week used is too low then it may be impossible to "flex up" enough and you have to make sure you have at the outset enough people willing to do the o/t and have the necessary training to do the job.
(Eff all point bringing in extra p/t staff to help on the IPS if they don't actually know it - but that's the crazy s**t that goes on)

Are you serious?
It is hardly ever the "model week".
Agency staff all year round?

No...but from October/November to January/Febuary definitely.
There is little appetite from members to "flex up" at all but particularly during the winter months.
Someone has to do it...it's either that or you take on FTC's for six months and then get rid.
It amounts to the same thing anyway.

I assume the agency staff only do delivery.
Does that mean you get one as a partner in your P&L?
Do they just do cut-offs? Do they use pouch boxes or do managers ferry them about?
Is it possible for permanent staff to do a lot more indoor work and avoid being out on delivery? :nana

Yes...they only do delivery.
We used ours to cover the left overs, usually in teams of three partnered with an experienced OPG.
Yes...sometimes some of us were taken off delivery to cover indoor only work. :whistle
Some of our agency staff are still there...now working for Royal Mail. :Very Happy

In over 20 years we have only employed agency staff twice, two of them, about 10 years ago - it wasn't a success and the experience has never been repeated.
We have a plethora of part time staff who are upgraded to full time as and when necessary and all are upgraded over christmas, that put an end to block overtime.

next day I did the round and after the 1st bag I was given loads of mail back as the prat had delivered 80 houses wrong as he had delivered to the wrong street,

The bad experience involved this guy being sent out on a delivery at about 0800. At the time we had safe drops and the mail was left in sacks to be transfered to the pouch and the sacks left for the driver to recover the following day. I was on afternoons at the time and at 1600 in walks this guy with ALL the mail loose and unbanded in two sacks. The following day the guy was told he was no longer required, he'd been there about 4 days and he said "Yeah well I'd better speak to the union about this" :nana

It's good to get these types of threads, the ridiculous my manager said bollox, so we can reassure ourselves that while the world is falling apart, Royal Mail managers are still being the low-life C***S they have always been.

The daily grind of having to argue your case with an intellectual pigmy of a line manager is physically and emotionally draining.
