NEW STARTERS

hi all its been now 5 weeks since i started for royalmail what can i say really enjoying it but hey i know the worst is to come before you all tell me.
had my driving test today and passed so can drive the van now. so me duty has been changed to 20 hours over 3 days now starting next week so see how it goes
im just really wondering how the rest of the new starters are doing if there enjoying it or not . how have they found it and any other stuff they want to get
of there chest about working at diffrent depots if not the same.

Hello.... i'm going to whisper my reply because i posted on here once that i was loving the job and I hadn't noticed any of problems that people had mentioned. I even put in a disclaimer(like you did) that i acknowledge that i have only been doing the job 8 weeks and i know it will all change in winter etc..... but i got a right kicking.

So between you and me I love the job...... so far.... do you think i may be in for another kicking ?

I worked in hotels years ago and came accross managers who worked for the same company but worked in very different ways within each hotel .... RM seems to be the same - Good Bad and Ugly Managers..... im VERY lucky I SEEM to have some good (and ugly)managers....SO FAR

yep im the same got really good managers apart from one thats thinks he is the bees knees. he is just a stand in for when my line mangers are on sick or holidays but he makes it his duty to find himself all over the new starters to tell them there not doing the job right and showing us how its done in front of the big manager proper prick thats all i can say about him

Exactly right. It varies from unit to unit and then more so from region to region. Often based on the strength of the office. That is, how willing they are to stick together and fight or whether they're just atomised individuals taking an 'I'm alright jack' attitude. That then allows the managers to take the pish.

I'm a new starter this year and still enjoying it. It's hard work for sure - far higher level of concentration needed for the entire day than I was expecting. Also I come home feeling wiped out most days, but that's no different to most jobs I've had before. Some days are worse than others, but it seems I'm lucky to have a decent team in our office and the manager at least talks to me like a human being - not something I'm used to after working in retail for over a decade before this job!

I'm a new starter (3 weeks in) and am liking it. The manager makes all the difference, he seems pretty good. Just working out who the nice (and not so nice) people in the depot are at the moment!

I've found that if you stand firm from the start - for example coming in to a half sorted frame - you generally avoid being taken advantage of

On the whole - I like it!

I started in March (Edit:Feburary seems so long ago) and didn't realise how much I'd learnt from this forum, before I told a manager "I don't think Ill be able to finish the round, what would you like me to do".

I though this was a normal thing you have to do if it's really busy and you are a new starter, but everyone around me thought it was some major thing. He said call up around the end
and ask, then offered overtime. Meanwhile another new starter was getting ripped into by another manger for not being able to do his job and IPS.

Very random, some managers are great and get everyone to put down excess, others just hang around in the background picking off those they think they can bully.

been six months now never been asked dont no who uinion rep is. But am a member because I applied online.

20hrs over 3 days. not even doing a 7hr day. heaven.

2 days, but it was made clear it was completely up to me, I joined and have never seen him since

I think it was around 7 / 8 days after my first day that I had the letter from the Union.
