css team leader and application procedure.

Morning all. We recently have had the job application come up for css machine operators, and with leadership. I went for both and for the leadership you had to do a 2 part online test. Which I heard 5 people went for, the other 6 just going for the operators.
Of the 5 people who went for the leadership role only 2 passed, union rep who I'm sure a few people will know, and me. I know you still have 2 have an interview, as do all the jobs, But because all other 10 people are more senior and 3 of them already hold night shift allowance. Can they just brush me to the side? I've spoke to the rep and he's looking into it for me. But I thought id ask if anyone had any experiance of this..

Lukew - please do not name people on RMC without the permission of both the named person and the Admin team of RMC. We allow people to have anonymity on here as far as possible, to aid in that we allow people to "out" themselves but no-one else whatever the justification. Of course for Nationally known individuals that rule does not apply.

I think you need to reasearch the skills selection rules under the various agreements but it does not sound right. I know there are different rules for skill based positions and this sounds like it would fall under them. IIRC Skill trumps seniority even when allowances are taken into account. I could be wrong but its worth invesigating.

(Actually I'll move this into the Union Room Dingo might see it there and he is the best I know for MTSF 1/2 and its application in certain scenarios)

Luke there are a couple of issues with your post. First there is a point of principle which has been raised already to both Royal Mail and the CWU regarding the fact that the guidelines state you should first select the jobs for the WSM operators and once you have selected them in line with the guidelines you then should fill the leadership roles from those who have a WSM operators role.

The criteria for selecting a WSM operator is provided the indidvual is suitable then it is by length of service. Now if someone is on night allowance already than it will depend if that persons exisiting night duty remains whether MTSF 2 is needed. If the indivdual`s night duty remains after WSM starts than I would argue that pure seniroity should apply. However if the indivduals night duty was being ceased on the introduction of WSM than MTSF 2 would kick in which meant that those in reciept of the allowance will get first choice.

I'm sure dingo is right, however the role of WSM Operator and Supervisor are advertised and remain open for a limited time only and at the same time. Each post is subject to interview, in the case of the Supervisors role you have to pass a second test and the interview is fairly rigorous by RM standards and only those who pass the test are interviewed for Supervisor. Over the 6 day period you do need 2 supervisors one as the full time supervisor who receives the payment on a permanent basis and the stand in who only receives the payment on an as and when basis. Both posts are subject to seniority/suitability BUT you need to pass the training. It isn't an easy job and they try to keep operators to a minimum even to the extent of under manning.

The tests are on line and aren't administered very well. You should also receive the training which is 3 days for Operator and 4 days for Supervisor and you are then given 28 days to decide if you want to remain on the machines or return to your original duty.
