HCT and snow

Post by Blue29 »

Just so as I know, what happens to HTCs in snow?

I've never seen one never mind used one but as all this revision malarky puts more of them out there I'm curious to know how they get on in snow.

No doubt there will be a picture in the Courier's November issue of some knob pushing it through 3 feet of snow.

I was using one on the day of the serious snowfall (sat 18 DEC) !
I went out about nine. no snow falling and none on the ground.
four inches plus fell while i was out and i struggled to get the trolley back to the office.
as you can imagine the drag of the wheels is bad . worst though was the low hanging bit between the wheels
(which i dont use for storage as its not secure ) if a little bit of snow sticks it will build up like a snowplough
and bring you to a stop.
I'm a postman-and i know where you live.....

when you read the operational information for the HCT's and the LWT's you can see that they are not to be used in the winter .

This in turn means the extra large park and loop duties will have to be completed by pouch so no weight of the shoulder

I can't imagine HCT's being usable in snow as I have experience of one of the old four wheelers some years ago, but as my cycle keep slipping away from me when we had last winters snowfall, I asked if I could try a lightweight trolley instead - found the two wheels when pulling and 3 point contact when parking to be very stable and easier than carrying a satchel in slippy or deep snow conditions (and we did have snow cover for some weeks !) plus there was room for a flask with a hot drink :). I must add though that I work on a flat area - any of you delivering on areas with any sort of gradient may find it more difficult. If in doubt do your own risk assessments and refuse any unsafe delivery method.

BTW - has the summer been SO bad that we are worrying about snow already ?
We wish to serve - but we will not be servile

If the pavements on delivery are not cleared from snow and level then HCT is not be used, the H&S rep should go out in a van
with manager and check some streets and make a decision.

The Dom should have a contingency plan which usually involves dead walking to drop boxes light years away and hanging around in the freezing cal waiting for a line manager to drop off a bag via a visit to Greggs.Which he will stress wont take one minute longer than on a sunny day in July.
