New Part Timer with occasional driving

Post by zidangus »

Hi, I am about to start a part time postman position with the royal mail with occasional driving and I am wondering if anyone can give me an idea of a typical day. For example I do not start until 10.00am and finish at 2.30pm, so will I need to sort any mail, or will I just be delivering ? On average how long do you spend in the mail room and how long will I spend outside delivering. If anyone can give a breakdown of a typical day it would be really helpful.

Cheers in advance :D

The plan would be less than 30minutes inside, with it being mostly ready to go.

In reality, it's anyone's guess.

I've been doing a contract the same as you now for two weeks - mine's 9.00 - 2.00, it's meant to be sorted but I usually get there and have to do loads myself, plus I'm really slow because the frame is not familiar to me.

By the time I've finished sorting, packed up, done my re-directs, sorted the packets and bagged up it's about 1 1/2 hours later before I leave. My walk is a good 4.5 hours then too what with the lapsing etc. :cry :cry

Sime83, so you have been working 6 hours a day but your only on a 5 hour contract. Do you get paid overtime for that or do you just get paid basically to deliver your round, so 5 hours pay no matter how long you take ?

Just to deliver my round, the excuse when I raised it was that I will speed up in time and they can't help it if I'm late. It's early days though so hopefully I'll speed up - and the sorting really should be all done by rights. I can't really say much at the moment because I'm new and don't want to be seen as trouble, but at the same time need to ensure I'm not working for nothing regularly.

It's a nice job once you get out and about - I didn't mean to put you off or anything in my reply. On days like today (sunny here) it beats working indoors.

if you are contracted to 5 hours aday and work even 1 min past that time you claim overtime for it full stop

You do not get paid "Just to deliver my round", you should work only your contacted hours and cut off at your finish time if necessary (or work to the completion of your duty and claim the overtime).

Your manager is taking the piss, because he knows you are new and is counting on you not making a fuss. He's not doing that for your sake, all he's interested in is feathering his own nest via the bonus he receives as a result of people not claiming for the overtime they have worked.

If you think that you will be unable to complete on any given day, tell your manager before you leave the office in the morning, and agree with him to either: 1. Leave what you think you will be unable to complete in the frame. 2. Bring back what you are unable to complete, or 3. complete your duty and then claim the overtime afterwards. Just be aware, however, that managers have a habit of "forgetting" what overtime you have worked and often will not submit a claim for you.

Thats weird, I've never had any problem at all claiming overtime. In fact, its been actively offered if it looks like im getting out late. I guess its all down to the manager..?
