Hybrid duty?

Post by luddite »

We've been told that hybrid duties are coming in whether we like them or not and that the start times will be around 10am, no one in our office wants them so they will be 'imposed'.
Am I wrong in thinking that the last agreement stated that no one had to start later than 7am?
Or did I dream it? :hmmmm

You were dreaming. A certain percentage are guaranteed to start before 7:15 i think. So those with low service get used to rubbish work patterns that will not benefit your lifestyle at all.

Where. I have read it cover to cover and there is no mention of a 715 starts.
As part of the operational transformation the vast majority of full time delivery duties will start no later than 0700. The majority of delivery routes will be designed to start and finish at the workplace; however there will be some duties where it is more beneficial for both parties to agree alternative arrangements. In addition pouching off arrangements will remain where it is practical and efficient to do so. Employees who wish to retain their current contracted hours will have the option to do so, however all employees will need to recognise that in order to provide innovative attendance patterns and duty structures they will need to embrace change which may mean an alteration to attendance times.

The only hint of hybrid duties I found was this section:
Employees who wish to retain their current contracted hours will have the option to do so, however all employees will need to recognise that in order to provide innovative attendance patterns and duty structures they will need to embrace change which may mean an alteration to attendance times.
Delivery spans will be a key component of delivery duty structures and a pragmatic and flexible approach to this consistent with the sections of this agreement covering spans and delivery methods will be essential in securing attendances which meet the aspirations of employees and provides a reliable and consistent service to customers in line with the new workplan detailed in the generic section of this agreement. In addition to normal/traditional delivery duty structures there is scope for securing full-time working through the effective use of technology (units with CSS machines) and different methods of delivery for example linking business and residential deliveries, the introduction of new products and services (particularly in the fulfilment market), as well as through cross functional working e.g. collections.
Sounds like the OP needs to get in touch with Area/Div and HQ to sort this one out.

Hybrid duties are an option laid out in the Duty Design Principles not the Agreement itself.

Hybrid (Collections) Duties
Where collections are undertaken in a Delivery Offices then there may be an opportunity to achieve further efficiencies by combining delivery activity at the front end and collection activity at the back end of the same duties. Such hybrid duties will add to the portfolio of roles available within an office and may appeal to those who prefer outdoor work.

Understanding employee preferences and motivations at the outset of a revision should help establish whether there is an appetite for hybrid duties. If this proves to be the case then the inclusion of hybrid roles should be considered at the duty design stage once delivery and collection routes are known.

For example, once the final collection routes are available and the supplementary collection workload determined i.e. platform activity, Mail Centre feeder services, key locker work, under the roof business mail traying and Post Office counter mail consolidation, then these elements should be considered for alignment with delivery activities.
Offices that have already deployed a Collection Best Practice revision or that have completed their duty planning and worked closely with delivery, have found that this is a solid approach to help produce an optimum duty set. The high level approach to this work can be noted as;

•Finalise new collection routes in line with the Access Time Specification to achieve Mail Centre requirements & USO obligations
•Calculate indoor workload using Under the Roof (UTR) Model (Collection Hubs Only)
•Finalise collection work to mail centre feeder runs
•Construct broad make up of duties (including all supplementary workload)
•Produce optimum duty set, to include robust Saturday plans

Hybrid roles should align with the key design principles already mentioned at page 3 above and particular attention is drawn to the following:

•Must not compromise consistent achievement of delivery service standards and the access time specification and USO obligations

•Must not compromise achievement of work-plan, especially with regard to mail centre clearances

•Must allow for stable resourcing of regular and absence cover roles and be sustainable in the longer term
good times, bad times you know I've had my share

Thanks Fish,
gaffer says that we have to bring in hybrids, it's out of his control and orders from above etc etc No delivery postman wants them because of the late hours, the part time collection staff have been offered the same hours but in the morning doing a small amount of delivery. The collection staff have said that because of child care issues they cannot work mornings!
We suspect that it's a sly way of removing staff through the back door! :hmmmm
Thanks for your help
