Reserves and their days off

What's the official line on reserves and their days off, I know you've said it's down to local reps etc but is there anything in writing that says reserves should still get 1 in 6 saturdays off etc......

Also, I was off last tuesday and low and behold they've rota'd me to be off this tuesday, with it being school hols etc I've arranged childcare for tuesday as I was off last tuesday and guessed (it's never happened before that I get the same day off two weeks in a row) that I would be off a different day, can they give reserves 2, 3, 4,10, 20 tuesdays off in a row, reserves must have some rights as other staff only have 1 tuesday in 6 off, you understand what I'm trying to say I'm sure?

I know what you mean. I got last saturday off surprisingly, and as My day off is never sequential (one week i'll get a Monday off, the next it could be a Friday) i didn't check the rotor and went in on the monday to find i was off?! Lol

Your rep and manager should do the duty board. The reserve list,(in seniority order) is kept separate. You as a reserve pick your duty for next week. I always picked a duty with a long weekend,(sometimes).

Never happened in my office, manager just fills in whoever he thinks can actually do it.

They tried it in ours...only once though! We put a stop to that!

You can request a particular duty each week at our office, and it then goes on seniority if two or more reserves want it. I've never requested a duty, personally, I like a bit of variety and randomness. We also get the correct days off in our office for the actual duty that we're on, i.e. if there's a rotating day we get the appropriate rotating day, otherwise we get the fixed day off for that particular duty. Never had this 'every Tuesday off' problem that other offices seem to have. On occasion I have suffered the odd Tuesday off, but it's a 1 in 6 chance and that's fair as far as I'm concerned.

I have, at last, got a round (until our revision resign) but have had nine years of Tuesdays off, Days off moved to Bank Holidays and had at least one year without a single long weekend off.

You must be from the fabled offices that still have short Saturdays.

5 day weeks fixed day Delivery methods revision due early next year and sequenced mail arrives October this year so its not hard to have short Saturdays.

Doesn't work like that at our office, we get put on different duty every day dependant on who knows the duty, we have 30 + rurals in our office so it's a bit different to normal offices, problem is they've given me tuesday again, and I''ve already told my childminder it wouldn't be tuesday and they've arranged something, the arrogant DIM just said 'tuesdays you're day off, you've got all weekend to get cover sorted out', which I don;t think is good enough?

I've never come across any official policy or agreement for Reserves and their days off.

Reserves in my D.O do get Saturdays off if covering a Saturday off duty, but its not 100% of the time.

I meant that because WSQ mail and DM revision are not yet upon my D.O and attendance patterns couldn't gain much support thus D.O is still on 5 day week fixed day off, early finish on Saturdays is still very much a reality.

Yes,we too are still 0n 5 day week with shorter Saturdays. In terms of delivery methods,and walk sequenced revisions we have put in an actual 7 step process. Stage 0,(like collections revisions) has to meet both parties objectives. Could not agree. No revision. Then all revisions have now been put on hold. As we where so to speak.

Although not always possible they are supposed to try and give you the 1 in 6 saturdays off, if you feel you have waited too long see your union and managment and tell them you are well overdue a saturday off, don't fall for the line where they say you are a reserve you are still entitled to equal treatment or you are well within your rights to put in a grievance.
