Working one week notice

I am handing my notice in at Royal Mail soon. Just got a few questions to ask about it.

Is it likely that I will be asked to work my one week notice or will they ask me to leave there and then?
I am a bit worried that if I work my one week notice I not get paid for it, is this likely?
Do you hand your notice to the line manager, DOM or HR in Sheffield?
Will I get any holiday pay that I am owed as I have not had any holiday leave yet?

Once you give your notice direct to your dom in writing he will calculate what leave you have accrued and you will be offered the chance to take it as money in your final pay packet or have it as your notice period if it is more than 5 days. He will probably beg you to stay a few weeks while he sorts out a sticky leave period and you will still be there 20 years lateer.....

Either - depends on local situation and what choices the manager gives you.

Not likely as it is illegal. Don't forget though that RM do not work a week in hand so if you finish on a Saturday - the pay you got on Friday will be the last one your due, unless there is some pay outstanding.

Manager - he will send a copy to HR

you'll get the amount you are due not the full year. IE for ease of calculation if you are entitled to 4 weeks leave over the year you'll get 1 week for every 3 months worked. Rough Guide working Apr - July means you get 1/3 of a years entitlement.

What if i leave in september, have taken 3 weeks and been paying for 6.5 days extra leave?

RM will want it back, how they go about it........I don't know.

a lad in our DO had 5 weeks to do, he did not turn in but still got paid.

Across the board a Postman handing his notice only has to give 1 weeks notice.

However, If RM want to terminate your employment then there is a sliding scale based on length of service. See table

Thanks for all your help on this forum. You are always quick to reply and give me great advice.

Definitely handing my notice in on Monday and working the one week required if I am allowed. I kept my head down for a week and things were going quite well until this morning. Expected a nice easy Saturday after a hard week and walked in to an empty frame again. I had to put nearly all the letters in myself :-( LM told me someone had let him down (which is the same thing another LM told me when it happened two Saturdays ago). Told him it did not matter as I am handing my notice in. Things quickly started to change then - he started to offer to pay me overtime (even insisted on it this time) and even put a few letters in for me which has never ever happened before.

I had to sort emergency child care out for my son as my wife was working which is not the first time as I finished over an hour over my time. It was the last straw to be honest. When I am asked why I am leaving I am going to try my best to leave on good terms so will say that job is just not for me... Hopefully they will treat my replacement a bit better :-(

Dont be a stranger when you've left sometimes its good to hear information and advice from those that have left.

Just one point though, if you really want your replacement treated better then I would give them both barrels. Be honest and polite whilst doing it, but tell them truthfully why your leaving, even if it pisses the manager off and least he will hear the truth, and it will make you feel better.

When hr send the letter asking why have u left etc, I put down everything that happened with the dons, the bullying, them pissing off early every day, the unpaid ot, etc etc etc. What good it does I don't know but it bloody well made me feel great. Never ever heard or had a letter to follow up why I put all that in.

But hold on, I thought your managers said that you're only paid to clear the frame? It's funny how their 'rules' change all of a sudden!
